Threnody (for the people of Gaza)
“We have been silent witnesses of evil deeds.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer “In those years only the dead smiled, glad to be at rest.” – Anna Akhmatova “Requiem” Now the winds blow fair A wedding feast of blood Cities sacked, crops despoiled The endless drone of clever and evil men faceless and already dead A dawn without light A blank sky, an indifferent sea The cries of mothers, always and only mothers Their cries freeze the air Children set aflame, walking towards us Embraces we scorn Quiet...
Effect of cultivar differences in seed size on early season growth and physiology of cotton under low and high‐temperature extremes
PAR photosynthetically active radiation PLS partial least squares PSI Photosystem I PSII Photosystem II SLW specific leaf weight 1 INTRODUCTION Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is the most widely cultivated species of cotton, accounting for approximately 97% of total global cotton production (Sanchez et al., 2019). However, cotton is known to have less vigorous seedling growth than many major row crops (Pilon et al., 2016).

Unlock the Power of Reading and Audiobooks: How Words Can Transform Your Mind, Body, and Life
Unlock the Power of Reading and Audiobooks: How Words Can Transform Your Mind, Body, and Life Let’s face it — life is busy. We’re constantly juggling work, family, and everything in between. But what if I told you there’s one simple habit that can make you smarter, happier, and healthier, all at once? It’s not a new diet, a workout plan, or a meditation app — it’s reading.
Distinguishing High Daytime From Nighttime Temperature Effects During Early Vegetative Growth in Cotton
Early season vegetative growth of cotton exhibited differential responses to high daytime and nighttime temperatures. Increased leaf area mainly contributed to increased biomass production under high nighttime temperature. Increased nighttime respiration caused reductions in biomass due to combined high daytime and nighttime temperature. Decreased leaf area and net photosynthetic rate and increased nighttime respiration drove reductions in biomass under high daytime temperature alone.

Investigating upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varietal performance in alternative row arrangements in Georgia
B3XF Bollgard 3 Xtendflex DG DynaGro DP Deltapine FFB first fruiting branch NAWF node above white flower PHY Phytogen ST Stoneville W3FE Widestrike 3 Roundup Flex Enlist 1 INTRODUCTION Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production is of vital importance to the US economy. On an annual basis, the United States produces approximately 15–20 million bales of cotton, representing $7 billion in value, and providing 35% of the global cotton exports (USDA ERS, 2022).
Impacts of wide row spacings on yield and yield components of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
Abbreviations HVI high-volume instrument SSA seed surface area 1 INTRODUCTION Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has been of significance to Georgia's agriculture industry since the 1700s, as Georgia was the first colony to commercially produce cotton (UGA Extension, 2020). Today, cotton is Georgia's second most widely produced commodity, following broiler production, with approximately 470,000 harvested ha of the national total of 4.2 million ha in 2021 (USDA NASS, 2021).
Drought response modelling of leaf photosynthetic parameters in two Gossypium species
Stomatal effects are the primary limitation under drought for Pima and upland cotton. Energy capturing processes seem insensitive to mild drought in both species. Photorespiration appears to be more important for energy dissipation in upland cotton, as opposed to Pima cotton. 1 INTRODUCTION Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is considered a drought tolerant crop because cotton can produce fibre over a wide range of moisture environments.
Diffusional and Biochemical Limitations to Photosynthesis Under Water Deficit for Field‐Grown Cotton
1 INTRODUCTION Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is the dominant fiber crop in the world (Smith and Cothren 1999, Khadi et al. 2010). In 2023, 24.6 million tons of cotton were produced from 31.7 million ha globally (MacDonald et al. 2024). Plant-available water is one of the most limiting abiotic factors for cotton growth, development, and yield (Boyer 1982, Constable and Bange 2015).
Episode 41- Cotton Seed Quality, II
Steve M. Brown is a 1978 graduate in agronomy and soils from Auburn University and later earned MS and PhD degrees in agronomy/weed science at Auburn and Texas A&M, respectively. He worked as an assistant county agent in a cotton pest management role for a couple of years in northern Alabama and then served as a research associate in a Cotton Incorporated-funded project on no-till cotton from 1980 to 1984.
Episode 40 - Cotton Seed Quality
Fred Bourland (University of Arkansas), Camp Hand and John Snider (University of Georgia) and Lori Unruh Snyder (NC State) join host Steve Brown in a detailed discussion on Seed Quality. Subjects include Cotton Incorporated Beltwide Seed Quality Projects 1.0 and 2.0, visual mechanical damage (VMD), seed quality measurements, comparisons with seed in Australia, "seed vigor" versus "seedling vigor" and considerations for planting in 2024. A related discussion will follow in a couple of weeks.
