How Subject Gender Shapes the Level and Progression of Police Use of Force
Abstract Use-of-force research often includes subject gender as a control, but gender is rarely the primary focus. Adopting a focal concerns perspective, we examined whether (1) officers use more force against male subjects than female subjects; (2) incidents with female subjects progress differently than those with male subjects; and (3) officer gender conditions the effects of subject gender. We analyzed 7,009 force incidents using a multilevel framework nesting force sequences within incidents.

Why the security of the business depends on app security
The success of Pokemon Go pushed the company to create a security culture that included DevSecOps. Today’s columnist, John Worrall of Zero North, offers insights on how companies can focus more on application security. AdamPurves(S3ISOR) CreativeCommons CC BY 2.0 As the demand for digital solutions keeps expanding, application security (AppSec) has become one of the most pressing concerns organizations face.

Behind the Scenes of AppSec’s Misalignment
There’s something to be heard in the conversation. By John Worrall, CEO at ZeroNorth We live in a world defined by software, which is precisely why it must be secure. From the everyday applications, we use on our devices to the avionic software of modern commercial aircraft, the code embedded behind the functions of civilization matters in every way. But there’s a problem.
How to foster a secure and compliant DevOps culture
Companies looking to balance DevOps with compliance are ever-mindful of filing requirements by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Today’s columnist, John Worrall of ZeroNorth, offers ways for companies to better integrate DevOps and compliance teams. The CISO Conundrum: Moving From 'Dr. No' To Business Enabler
John Worrall joined ZeroNorth as CEO in 2019 and has since helped the company to advance its capabilities within application security. Getty Like most people, I've been spending a lot of time at home this year, which has provided a rare opportunity to tackle my ever-expanding reading list. In between new titles, I recently brushed off one of my favorite business books, The Phoenix Project, which perfectly illustrates the deep cultural divides between internal lines of business today.
DevOps and Compliance: A Recipe for Success
In today’s world, DevOps and compliance teams need to work together, not separately Imagine this: You organized a dinner party weeks ago, promptly forgot about it and just realized tonight’s the night! You have two hours to whip up a gourmet meal for 10 friends. Instead of panicking, you get smart and enlist your kids to form an assembly line. One starts on sides, the other maps out dessert and you begin marinating steaks. All goes well—until the Brussel sprouts burn.
Why Quality & Security Both Matter in Software

Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. It's time to position quality and security as equals under the metric of software integrity. Software has forever revolutionized traditional product development. It's what sets companies apart — the ultimate competitive advantage. But it has to be done right.
The Name On The Front
John Worrall joined ZeroNorth as CEO in 2019 and has since helped the company to advance its capabilities within application security. getty It's a teachable moment wrapped in a Hollywood drama: The U.S. men's ice hockey team is preparing for the 1980 Winter Olympics. The movie is Miracle, and the coach is Herb Brooks, played by Kurt Russell. After multiple scenes of athletes identifying solely with their college teams instead of the national one they're building, Coach Brooks has had enough.
Now More Than Ever? Securing the Software Life Cycle
The more things change, the more they stay the same. That's true for software security, even in these turbulent times. With so much change in the world right now, it's easy to lose sight of what's important in business. In the cybersecurity realm, many COVID-19-related sales pitches highlight the growing importance of certain measures, such as multifactor authentication, while others focus on leveraging emotions like fear or uncertainty.
Security Boulevard
Since joining ZeroNorth as CEO seven months ago, I have been inspired and energized by our team’s commitment to helping organizations tackle the pervasive software application security challenge. According to the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, one in three US cybersecurity jobs are now vacant, which means organizations everywhere must combat growing threats with fewer resources.

COPS GRANTS AND CRIME REVISITED*
Abstract Using 6 years of panel data, Zhao, Scheider, and Thurman (2002) found that funding from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), reduced property and violent crime in large U.S. cities. We merged their COPS data with 11 years of panel data from a sample of 189 large cities, such that the period before the COPS program was covered. We also controlled for pre-existing effects on crime of police spending.
