John-Manuel Andriote’s Biography

I began reporting on HIV-AIDS while I was working on a master’s degree in journalism at Northwestern University in 1986.

Beginning in 1988, I parlayed my portfolio of articles on the subject into staff positions with the American Psychiatric Association and Family Health International, and as a consultant for numerous national and global organizations.

I also leveraged my reporting on HIV-AIDS into broader health and medical-related subjects, which I’ve written about for The Atlantic, Huffington Post, the Washington Post, and others.

Kirkus Reviews called my 1999 book VICTORY DEFERRED: HOW AIDS CHANGED GAY LIFE IN AMERICA (University of Chicago Press) “The most important AIDS chronicle since Randy Shilts’ AND THE BAND PLAYED ON.”

Because I am a highly versatile writer with wide-ranging interests, I also have authored several other books: HOT STUFF: A BRIEF HISTORY OF DISCO (HarperEntertainment, 2001); two indie-published books: TOUGH LOVE; A WASHINGTON REPORTER FINDS RESILIENCE, RUIN AND ZOMBIES IN HIS ‘OTHER CONNECTICUT HOMETOWN; and a children’s book about a runaway cow and her deer friends called WILHELMINA GOES WANDERING.

In 2019 I am promoting STONEWALL STRONG in media interviews, public readings and talks. I regularly share lessons on resilience in my “Stonewall Strong” blog for PSYCHOLOGY TODAY.
