When Scientists and Engineers Need to Learn to Program but Don’t Want To « Computer Science# « Cambridge Core Blog
Nearly every scientist or engineer today needs to learn to program, but very few want to learn to program. Scientists and engineers code to live; they don’t live to code. However, many introductory programming textbooks and curriculum, while they gently teach students how to program, are geared towards budding computer scientists. Most of the examples in introductory programming resources are taken from fields unrelated to science or engineering, such as gaming and business.

A guide to Giving Tuesday 2024: The top four nonprofits changing lives in San Francisco
Johnny Lin · Follow 4 min read · -- As Giving Tuesday approaches tomorrow, I’m reminded of how I’ve reached where I am today. I’m currently a third-year student studying electrical engineering and computer sciences (EECS) at UC Berkeley — the #1 public university in the world. Four nonprofits stand out in my journey: two that directly shaped my path and two that I’ve worked with or created, each making a profound impact on youth in San Francisco.
7 queer films to watch out for this spring and summer
Only three months into the year, 2024 has already seen buzzy queer-themed titles like Love Lies Bleeding and Drive-Away Dolls make it onto the big screen. The rest of the year has a long list of hotly anticipated films that are slated to follow. From an intimate documentary about everyone’s favourite 1980s lesbian folk-rock duo to a surrealistic horror flick about the growing pains of being trans, here are some upcoming movies by or about LGBTQ2S+ people for you to enjoy this spring.
Announcing Neuronpedia: Platform for accelerating research into Sparse Autoencoders — LessWrong
This posts assumes basic familiarity with Sparse Autoencoders. For those unfamiliar with this technique, we highly recommend the introductory sections of thesepapers. Neuronpedia is a platform for mechanistic interpretability research. It was previously focused on crowdsourcing explanations of neurons, but we’ve pivoted to accelerating researchers for Sparse Autoencoders (SAEs) by hosting models, feature dashboards, data visualizations, tooling, and more.
9 queer films from last year to love (even if the Oscars didn’t)
From mainstream blockbusters to international gems, 2023 was a jam-packed year for films by and about LGBTQ2S+ people. Many of these films entered awards season contention and some even made it to the big stage—five out of 10 Best Picture nominees at the Oscars explore queer themes in one way or another, and yes, I am counting the not-so-subtle queer subtexts in Barbie. But as always, not every film gets a fair shot at the spotlight.
Age and mental health moderate the association between environmental concern (EC) and smoking frequency: smoking as a polluting behavior
1. Introduction A total of 6 trillion cigarettes are produced every year (1). Among these 6 trillion cigarettes, 5.8 trillion cigarettes are consumed by smokers worldwide (1, 2). Although smoking prevalence has decreased in developed nations (3), global consumption of cigarettes continues to grow as a result of smoking in young people in developing countries (4). Most smokers will agree that smoking not only poses a serious health risk (5) but also is detrimental to the environment.
‘American Made’ Producer Johnny Lin on Laying the Storytelling Foundation to Inspire the Next Generation Original
I work in the film industry, so storytelling is in my nature. There is an invaluable power to storytelling; stories are what allow us to connect. They are a tool that can be used to inspire others and provide them with an entirely different perspective — an ability that has always been critical, and this has become even more apparent in today’s social climate. Growing up, the stories of others impacted me greatly as a person, and through movies, I was able to bond with my father, Jimmy Lin.
Study: Effectiveness of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency
Does it stop third-party tracking? Or is it just an illusion of privacy? This study, conducted by Lockdown Privacy, was featured and summarized by The Washington Post in September 2021. Summary In April 2021, Apple released the App Tracking Transparency (“ATT”) feature with iOS 14.5. ATT claims to give users choice and transparency for third-party tracking in their apps, and it was lauded by many as a step forward in protecting user privacy. Does it really work?

Otherwise, the Acme deal [acmetools.com] is still running as well with delayed delivery, but supposedly sooner. Both Lowes and HD are out of stock and cannot order.

Ex-Apple engineer: Apple’s ‘Privacy Nutrition Labels’ have a fatal flaw
With the recent release of iOS 14, Apple enabled a new feature called “App Privacy” (or what they call Privacy Nutrition Labels) in the App Store, which supposedly shows users what information apps collect, and how it’s used.
How to Make $80,000 Per Month on the Apple App Store
"Just recently we passed $70 billion paid out to developers, 30% of that in the last year alone." - Phil Schiller, Apple SVP @ WWDC 2017 Read the story here: At WWDC, Apple reported that they've paid out $70 billion to developers, with 30% of that ($21 billion!) in the last year. That's a huge spike, and surprising to me because it didn't seem like my friends and I were spending more on apps last year. But that's anecdotal, so I wondered: Where are these revenues coming from?

It’s far easier than you think. No luck or perseverance necessary. Note: I originally published this story on Medium, where it received 45,000 likes (#52 overall that year). I’m republishing it here because writing this helped spark my interest in transparency and trust in software, and eventually building Lockdown Privacy, Openly Operated, and Privacy Review. How I Got from Idea to Product Hunt in 4 Hours
It's July 4th and I just bought a 24 pack of Coronas with my roommates, and the three of us are hanging out in the living room. Two beers in, Rahul says, "let's have a hackathon." The thought of competition spikes my adrenaline. Let's do it. But what to build? I opened up my ideas notepad. The last entry I wrote: Sounds good to me. The motivation for this was a vague passing thought one day about the effect of Twitter on communication. Twitter was never useful for me because there was so much noise.
