Cortico‐cortical connectivity of the somatosensory cortex of the agouti: Topographical organization and evolutionary implications
CONFLICT OF INTEREST STATEMENT The authors declare no conflicts of interest. REFERENCES , , , & (2000). Overlapping corticostriatal projections from the rodent vibrissal representations in primary and secondary somatosensory cortex. The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 428(4), 51–67. , , & (1996). Folding of the cerebellar cortex is clade-specific in form, but universal in degree

Turning Heads: The Vanderbilt Brain Institute has emerged as a hub of discovery as neuroscience’s influence expands
Science Photo Library The ancient Egyptians were the first to mention the brain in writing—preserved on a 2,700-year-old papyrus that details the symptoms of head injuries—but the importance of the organ escaped them. They believed it was the heart, not the head, that controlled human thought and emotion. Today our knowledge of the brain has far eclipsed what our forebears knew only a few generations ago, never mind 27 centuries.
Corticocortical projections to area 1 in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus)
Cortical area 1 is a non‐primary somatosensory area in the primate anterior parietal cortex that is critical to tactile discrimination. The corticocortical projections to area 1 in squirrel monkeys were determined by placing multiple injections of anatomical tracers into separate body part representations defined by multiunit microelectrode mapping in area 1.
Cortical projections to the superior colliculus in grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis)
The superior colliculus is an important midbrain structure involved with integrating information from varying sensory modalities and sending motor signals to produce orienting movements towards environmental stimuli. Because of this role, the superior colliculus receives a multitude of sensory inputs from a wide variety of subcortical and cortical structures.
