A Bad Situation Made A Lot Better
I was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident at Big Bend and Berry Road on Saturday, Sept. 26. I want to thank the numerous kind-hearted people who stopped or came out of their homes to help me and the other driver. Thankfully, we were okay. Also, kudos to the police and emergency services personnel who responded and were very professional. All of you helped make a bad situation a lot better. Jon Lawrence Webster Groves
Vernacular social democracy and the politics of Labour
This article was originally published in Renewal. Social democracy has put down deep roots in British popular culture; this is why Johnson’s government has instinctively favoured social democratic responses to the Covid-19 crisis. This vernacular social democracy is a potent resource which Labour can use to proclaim its vision of the good society.

As well as being the 75th anniversary of the Beveridge Report, 2017 also marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of Family and Kinship in East London, Michael Young and Peter Willmott’s classic account of working-class community in post-war Bethnal Green. Writing as passionate small state socialists, Young and Willmott sought to celebrate the vibrancy of working-class community life in London’s East End.
How To Deal With Grief
By Jon Lawrence, author of The Jack Newton Radio Having lost my friend in the 9/11 attacks on New York, an unborn child and watched my mother die following years of suffering after a stroke, one might think that I have got the hang of this ‘grief’ thing. Alas no, each loss comes with its own unique nuances of grief - no one person’s is the same as another’s. Sometimes anger is the primary emotion.
Why the Working Class was Never ‘White’
I am currently a little over half way through a two year project re-analysing the surviving field notes from a dozen or so classic social science projects from the late 1930s to the late 2000s. My purpose is to use these sources to explore the shifting nature of everyday life and culture through people’s own words.
