Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for GiveMeSport, I think. It was a while ago!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A word document, the Racing Post website and my brain. The latter is probably the least essential.

Why did you become a journalist?

I graduated with a degree in creative writing, wrote for sports publications for free for about four years and then I eventually got paid!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I've been lucky to tip some big-priced winners in my time, but Tiger Roll winning his first Grand National at 16/1 would be the highlight.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Put yourself out there, do as much work as you can and always believe in your own ability.

When's the best time to pitch you?

First thing in the morning. I'm an early bird.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I was once asked to write a restaurant review for a takeaway in Glasgow, when the editor knew that I lived in Birmingham.

What's your favorite drink?

A refreshing Spanish lager. Lilt and Umbongo tie for second. Cup of tea third.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Racing Post is certainly the best publication for horse racing content. David Jennings and Chris Cook would be among my favourite writers

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Tipsters should be able to pick the winner of every race. Oh, if only life was that simple...
