Banking with purpose: HNB’s blueprint for a sustainable Sri Lanka
By Jonathan Alles While the devastating impact of last year’s economic crisis continues to reverberate across the nation, a triple planetary crisis – climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss looms larger still over Sri Lanka. From the establishment of HNB to the present day, the world got 1.1 degrees Celsius warmer. That leaves the world with just 0.4°C left of warming before it hits 1.5°C, beyond which the likelihood of catastrophic climate impacts increases significantly.
Transforming Sri Lanka’s SME Landscape: A Roadmap to Prosperity
By Jonathan Alles SMEs have been an indomitable cornerstone of our nation’s economy. They make up 75% of all enterprises in Sri Lanka, in addition to generating 20% of all exports, 45% of employment and 52% of Gross Domestic Product. Unfortunately, despite having energised the aspirations of generations of Sri Lankans, today, our nation’s SMEs face a perilous existence and remain among the weakest equipped to face an increasingly uncertain future.
HNB’s vision for true economic revival
By Jonathan Alles In the wake of exponentially more severe disruptions – from extreme weather events, to the tragedy of the Easter attacks, to the COVID pandemic, and of the upheavals caused by last year’s economic crisis – Sri Lanka is a nation in desperate need of economic revival. For the first time in our history, the majority of Sri Lankans are united in their shared hardship arising from the total depletion of the nation’s foreign currency reserves.

Adapting to endure: Exploring HNB’s vision for restoring vibrancy to the Sri Lankan economy
“You cannot overtake 15 cars in sunny weather…but you can when it’s raining” – Ayrton Senna By Jonathan Alles Managing Director/CEO, HNB For all the historic challenges that Sri Lanka has overcome so far, the unfortunate truth is that our greatest difficulties still lie ahead of us. Sweeping structural reforms are urgently required across our nation’s economic, political, and social systems in order to slow Sri Lanka’s economic decline.
FLAM-seq: full-length mRNA sequencing reveals principles of poly(A) tail length control
Abstract Although messenger RNAs are key molecules for understanding life, until now, no method has existed to determine the full-length sequence of endogenous mRNAs including their poly(A) tails. Moreover, although non-A nucleotides can be incorporated in poly(A) tails, there also exists no method to accurately sequence them.
The Drosophila embryo at single-cell transcriptome resolution
When looking at populations of cells, features such as cell heterogeneity and localization are masked. However, single-cell sequencing reveals cellular heterogeneity and rare cell types. At the onset of gastrulation, the fly embryo consists of about 6000 cells with distinct gene expression profiles. Karaiskos et al.
The Drosophila embryo at single-cell transcriptome resolution
By the onset of morphogenesis, Drosophila embryos consist of about 6000 cells that express distinct gene combinations. Here, we used single-cell sequencing of precisely staged embryos and devised DistMap, a computational mapping strategy to reconstruct the embryo and to predict spatial gene expression approaching single-cell resolution. We produce a virtual embryo with about 8000 expressed genes per cell.
