Veto physician-assisted suicide
A letter to Governor Pritzker: Independent living liberation is not optional, it’s survival! My good friend, mentor, and nationally recognized independent living advocate Larry Biondi wrote those principles one day during a trip we and some friends took on the train to Springfield to advocate for the rights of the disability community. Sadly, Larry passed away in 2021, but his legacy reminds us of an American ethic which is Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Think about that for a moment.
The UK funding crisis may just see the emergence of a…
PA Consulting’s latest survey of university leaders makes clear that, rather than wait for government direction, vice-chancellors and their teams are recognising that they are best placed – with both the agency and the vision – to build their own futures amid near-unanimous agreement about the scale of the challenges facing the sector.
Ballet teacher accused of abuse touched pupils to make dance safe, court told
PA Archive A ballet teacher accused of sex offences insisted he was focused on safety when he touched pupils without permission, a court has heard. Jonathan Barton, 41, denies allegations from nine complainants, spanning 2004 until 2019, at a ballet school in Argyll. Two women claim he had sexual relations with them while they were his students, amounting to an abuse of trust, while seven others allege he touched them inappropriately.

How many lights - and how much power - do I need for my greenhouse?
How exactly do you know how many lights you might need for your own greenhouse, though? And how much power are they likely to need? In this blog, I’ll show how some simple calculations can help you answer both of those questions. Establishing factors Before we get our calculations underway, we need two supporting pieces of information. These are: • The size of the greenhouse that you are lighting, and; • The intensity of light that you want to provide to your crop.
Fanning the flames of innovation: how smarter design is a path to horticultural efficiency
With its focus on rapid growth and high yields, horticulture has always served as byword for efficiency. The introduction of new technologies and new techniques has led to continued refinement in the cultivation process and the sector as a whole has done much to manage its carbon footprint. While innovation and new ideas have always played an integral role in horticulture’s history, they’ve never been more important than they are today.
Jonathan Barton column: Land and Water Conservation Fund preserves stories and creation
We are taught that “In the beginning ... ” God created the heavens and earth and the fullness thereof. The Divine placed us in the garden and introduced us to all the wonders of creation. “Behold my works, how beautiful, how splendid they are. All that I have created, I created for you.
Barton: Reflecting on Resilience before the Paris Climate Negotiations - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Guest-columnists
The climate is getting warmer and this change poses a variety of risks for each of us, from public health and safety to the economic and political. Here in Richmond, it can be difficult to imagine what the climate negotiations in Paris have to do with the security of our own daily lives. That’s why — before the conference began — the Virginia Council of Churches co-sponsored a tour of our city to help local faith leaders reflect on just that.
BARTON: Vote to end torture - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Guest-columnists
Rejecting this program is not only the right thing to do — it’s the smart thing to do. Past reports showed that the CIA kidnapped and tortured individuals in secret prisons, built in foreign countries paid for with bribes given to foreign officials. Government agencies ought to uphold our most cherished values, not dishonor them. By voting against torture, the Senate has clearly rejected the CIA’s past torture program.
