Severance
Rated TV-MA • Apple TV+ For the first time since Ted Lasso, Apple TV+ has a true watercooler hit. Dan Erickson’s Severance has returned with a second season that sucks viewers in with mystery-box intrigue à la Lost—but resonates themes for today. Adam Scott (of Parks and Recreation fame) trades his comedy chops for a career-defining dramatic performance as Mark Scout, an employee on the “severed floor” of the Lumon megacorporation.
"Rings of Power" Season Two review: Imperfectly entertaining
Rated TV-14 • Prime Video The second season The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to explore the Second Age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. While this modern television take on Tolkien doesn’t perfectly capture the author’s spirit, it comes an ent-sized step closer than Season 1. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) returns as the primary protagonist in Season 2, but she takes a back seat in some episodes as other characters come to the fore.
Refashioning the ring
When J.R.R. Tolkien sold the film rights for his epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in 1969, he didn’t know he had created a genre that would someday fill entire bookstore shelves. He also had no idea the deal, worth 100,000 British pounds—about $2 million today—would eventually earn over $5 billion at the box office or that the Tolkien Estate would see hardly any of it.
Religious liberties and the origin of human rights (with Steve West)
JONATHAN BOES: As we look at the news, this concept comes up again and again, it’s the concept of rights, free speech rights, parental rights, religious liberty, you know, in the United States where we’re recording this, the Constitution, and its amendments protect these rights. But where do those rights come from? And what trends do we see today that are challenging those rights? If only we knew somebody with an ear to the ground, on these trends, maybe somebody who covers these stories as a job?
