Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Oh, sure. My dad was an episcopal minister, and typed his sermons out every Saturday night with two fingers on a manual Smith-Corona.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To not only to be able to communicate complex ideas effectively, but at the end of the day, to have moved the needle of public awareness.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

In the context of my areas of expertise -- adventure sports, environmental advocacy and conservation, biological sciences, and photography.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Apple and Nikon have served me well.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Remain curious.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Fly fishing on a river somewhere, or asleep under a tree on the bank.
