Jonathan M's Top 5 Games of 2020 — DarkStation
How do you sum up a year with only a few paragraphs, especially one like 2020? I mean, you can’t. I’ve come to find each new year’s Top 5 more challenging to write than the previous one, and 2020’s even more so. This year has been so terrible in so many ways, and I don’t need to recount them here. But video games have been extra special this year, providing a kind of shelter from the various storms of the year and a place for people to come together when they otherwise could not.

Unto the End Review — DarkStation
Unto the End is a 2D sidescrolling platformer focused on weighty and reactionary combat as well as a sense of loneliness and foreboding. It was developed by 2 Ton Studios, a two-person team comprised of Sara Kitamura and Stephen Danton for PC, and Stage Clear Studios ported the PlayStation and Xbox versions. I previewed the game and interviewed Sara and Stephen in November, but with the game released, I was thrilled to be able to sit down and play the entire thing.
The Falconeer Review — DarkStation
I have agonized over writing this review because I don’t want to say anything negative about The Falconeer. There’s something about it that I deeply love and it’s also severely problematic. As far as a factual introductory paragraph goes, here it is: The Falconeer is an aerial dogfighting game where you pilot giant falcons over an oceanic open-world. It’s the passion project from a one-man studio, Tomas Sala, and it’s currently available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S, and Steam.

Unto The End Preview — DarkStation
What if you took Limbo, Another World, and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out and combined them into a side-scrolling adventure? Well, you could get a monstrosity where you fisticuff with giant spiders on an alien planet. but that's not what I'm here to talk about (but make someone should make that too). No, we're here to talk about Unto the End, a minimalistic and cinematic, combat-focused platformer, and the first project from the husband and wife duo, 2 Ton Studios.
Watch Dogs: Legion (Xbox Series X) Review — DarkStation
***Disclaimer*** I originally reviewed Watch Dogs: Legion on an Xbox One S and experienced numerous technical issues. This review is of the Xbox Series X version of the game. The majority of the text is the same as the Xbox One review. Do you remember when Watch Dogs, the first one, was announced in 2012? It seemed to make everyone lose their mind. I know I did. It looked incredible. It was an open-world game that set out to defy so many genre tropes. It was going to be revolutionary.

Pendragon Review — DarkStation
Pendragon is a weird game that’s made more so due to the developers who made it. Inkle is the studio behind narrative masterpieces such as 80 Days and Heaven’s Vault as well as Steve Jackson’s Sorcery 1-4, all games where minimal gameplay entirely focuses on supporting the narrative. By contrast, Pendragon is an Arthurian-themed chess game where your moves and the “pieces” you play as/meet determine your story.
Watch Dogs: Legion Preview — DarkStation
Earlier this year, I had the chance to preview Watch Dogs: Legion, and it left me incredibly excited for the upcoming game. Since July, I’ve played through the story of the first Watch Dogs as well as a hefty amount of Watch Dogs 2, so I’ve gone from having zero interest in the series to being more of a fan than I’d care to admit. Recently, I once again had the opportunity to play Legion and I’m here to share my thoughts.

The Last of Us Part II Review — DarkStation
The Last of Us Part II is the latest game from Naughty Dog, the creators of many widely beloved games such as Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, and Uncharted. The first The Last of Us released in 2013, at the tail-end of the PlayStation 3's life, and received universal acclaim. It was a massive change in tone from the Uncharted series, being a stealth-oriented shooter set in the post-apocalypse.

Saints Row The Third Remastered Review — DarkStation
***There are spoilers for Saints Row The Third in this review*** Saints Row The Third was the first game in the franchise that I ever played. Skipping over the first two games, I assumed they were simple Grand Theft Auto clones but The Third looked like something else. After experiencing Saints Row’s brand of insanity, I played the original game, the sequel, and then went on to play Saints Row IV and Gat Out of Hell when they were released.

If you read much gaming news, you may have seen something about a game called Crucible in the last few weeks and if you’re anything like me, you would have been surprised to find out that a game we’ve heard little about over the past four years is coming out very soon. Crucible is the first major title from the Amazon games studio Relentless and it’s launching (as of this writing) tomorrow, on May 20, 2020. It’s a free-to-play online shooter and is available on PC via Steam.
Cloudpunk Review — DarkStation
Flying cars streaking through the sky, weaving between skyscrapers and plunging to the depths of a futuristic metropolis is a visage that numerous science fiction movies have depicted. While Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Fifth Element quickly spring to mind, few games have allowed players to drive through these kinds of cityscapes. Enter Cloudpunk, a cyberpunk game from the German indie developer Ion Lands centered on this exact kind of driving and exploration.
