Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

On the English-language desk of a Dutch financial newspaper. Then AP in Amsterdam.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. In my first job ...

How is social media changing news?

Completely, in the gathering and the telling and in our relationship with our readers. Journalists are no longer the sole dispensers of truth

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin, obviously.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You get to go to interesting places, meet interesting people, ask them interesting questions, and write about it. That's better than working.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

See above.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Pen, notebook, iPhone, Macbook Air, Twitter, Evernote, iA Writer, Ulysses III

What's your favorite social network?

I'm not a great sharer, except for professional purposes.

Who do you wish followed you?

Whoever appreciates my writing.

Why did you become a journalist?

I walked into a newsroom, saw a bunch of hacks feet up in torn jeans and scuffed boots smoking roll-ups, and thought: this is the job for me

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Wrote long and pseudo-poetic nonsense.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Firestorm was cool. Also Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan in 2003, to check out T Blair's claim that our boys do good wherever they go

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Follow the human.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Whenever, but always by email.
