What was your first job as a journalist?
A junior news writer at MTV News, writing copy for the legend that is Kurt Loder.
What's your favorite social network?
I am, alas, a Twitter lemming.
Who do you wish followed you?
Anyone who gives a shit about people who have less. Anyone who leads with kindness but is not afraid of a fight. Good trouble.
Why did you become a journalist?
I like telling stories, and I like asking questions particularly of artists who are in it for more than riches.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
The evolution of LGBTQ+ rights in the US and around the world. From the tragedy of Matthew Shepard to the joy of marriage equality and more.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Do you work that you can be proud of, don't feel hamstrung by others' perceptions of what they think you "ought" to do.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Late morning to late afternoon.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Any time I have been pitched stories which basically amount to me talking about the past. Not into the museum-piece gig.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Where else is anyone in Covid times? Reading on another device, even an actual book. Watching football. Allez les Bleus. Hala Madrid.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Guardian, NYT, P4K, Complex, The Atlantic, Bandcamp, FADER, Jacobin, XXL, Hypebeast, DIY, GQ, The Creative Independent, Liberation, HNHH
