Make a number more probable to result from random
This is overkill for you, but it's good to know an actual method for generating a random number with any probability density function (pdf). You can do that by subclassing scipy.stat.rv_continuous, provided you do it correctly. You will have to have a a normalized pdf (so that its integral is 1). If you don't, numpy will automatically adjust the range for you. In this case, your pdf has a value of 4/3 for x0.5, with a support of [0, 1) (support is the interval over which it's nonzero):
How to join list in Python but make the last separator different?
This solution can handle a list of authors of length > 0, though it can be modified to handle 0-length lists as well. The idea is to first create a format string that we can format by unpacking list. This solution avoids slicing the list so it should be fairly efficient for large lists of authors. First we concatenate for every additional author beyond two authors. Then we concatenate if there are two or more authors.
What do the commas mean in a statement like: a,b=b,a?

How to left align a fixed width string?
I definitely prefer the format method more, as it is very flexible and can be easily extended to your custom classes by defining __format__ or the str or repr representations. For the sake of keeping it simple, i am using print in the following examples, which can be replaced by sys.stdout.write.
