Columnanidus calitzdorpensis ichnogen. ichnosp. nov: A new Middle Pleistocene subterranean termite trace fossil from South Africa
Introduction Ants and termites have independently evolved complex eusocial behaviours, in which colonies function as a single, cohesive ‘superorganism’ working together to improve their survival and reproductive success. This advanced behaviour is mostly evident in the construction and excavation of their large nest structures, for which above-ground mound features can reach up to 10 m (Pullan, 1979).
The origin and evolutionary history of necrophagy in Scarabaeinae (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae): a comprehensive analysis of South American Coprinisphaera
Many aspects of the timeline and evolution of the dung beetles are still under debate. The age of origin of Scarabaeinae remains undetermined. Some phylogenetic analyses have proposed that the subfamily evolved in Africa during the Mesozoic (Ahrens et al. 2014; Tarasov & Génier 2015; Gunter et al. 2016) while others place its emergence in the early Cenozoic (Sole & Scholtz 2010; Mlambo et al. 2015).
