Gut microbiota restricts intestinal lipid uptake via modulation of bile phosphatidylcholine metabolism in mice
Abstract The gut microbiota influences host metabolism, but the mechanisms of lipid uptake from food remain mysterious. Here we used stable isotope-labelled tracers in gnotobiotic mouse models, which revealed that host uptake of dietary lipids depends on microbial colonization.
ATF6 activation alters colonic lipid metabolism causing tumour-associated microbial adaptation - Nature Metabolism
Abstract Endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein responses contribute to cancer development, with activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) involved in microbiota-dependent tumorigenesis. Here we show the clinical relevance of ATF6 in individuals with early-onset and late colorectal cancer, and link ATF6 signalling to changes in lipid metabolism and intestinal microbiota.
Post-fast refeeding: rise of intestinal stemness and mutagen-induced cancer risk through polyamine metabolism - Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy
An increased intestinal stem cell activity following post fast-refeeding is beneficial for regeneration, but too much could increase the risk for cancer in mice, as reported in a recent study by Imada and colleagues published in Nature.1 In consequence, fast-refeeding cycles should be thoroughly planned, when dietary strategies are considered for regeneration to minimize cancer risks.
Metabolic inflexibility of mitochondria: beneficial for the fitness of regenerating liver cells - Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy
In a recent manuscript in Science, Wang and coworkers discovered that metabolic inflexibility is required for proper mitochondrial function during liver regeneration.1 This study deepens our understanding of liver metabolism, stem cell biology and adult tissue renewal, suggesting that metabolic flexibility, generally assumed to be a selective advantage, may actually be detrimental for mitochondrial function in the regenerating liver.
Gut microbiota promote liver regeneration through hepatic membrane phospholipid biosynthesis
Hepatocyte growth and proliferation depends on membrane phospholipid biosynthesis. Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) generated by bacterial fermentation, delivered through the gut-liver axis, significantly contribute to lipid biosynthesis. We therefore hypothesized that dysbiotic insults like antibiotics treatment not only affect gut microbiota, but also impair hepatic lipid synthesis and liver regeneration.
The colorectal cancer lipidome - identification of a robust tumor-specific lipid species signature
This paper is only available as a PDF. To read, Please Download here. ABSTRACT Objective Lipidomic changes were causally linked to metabolic diseases, but the scenario for colorectal cancer (CRC) is less clear. We investigated the CRC lipidome for putative tumour-specific alterations through analysis of three independent retrospective patient cohorts from two clinical centers, to derive a clinically useful signature.
