Social media managers have feelings too
For a while now, I’ve been wanting to share some experiences of managing large, public social media channels during the pandemic. There’s a lot to say, and I’ve not really been able to find the time or — to be quite honest — the motivation to put some words down. One thing that caught up with me in the latter part of 2021 was the sheer volume of negativity directed at us through our social channels. It crept up on me, and that took me a bit by surprise.
Lessons from the covid-19 pandemic could help us reduce cyberbullying
Humans | Comment 8 December 2021 By Alexandra Martiniuk and Joseph Freeman Simone Rotella CYBERBULLYING was already a problem before the covid-19 pandemic hit. In Australia, for example, one in five young people reported in 2017 that they had been socially excluded, threatened or abused online, and the same proportion said they had participated in cyberbullying themselves. Then lockdowns and work-from-home orders came into force, meaning even more time was spent online.
International travel is back on. But what are we flying into?
Increasing vaccination coverage has led to increased confidence by government as well as confidence by the airlines to restart international flights. But what conditions will we be flying into? What is COVID-19, and life, like in the countries we can fly to? What countries can we visit? Those arriving or leaving from Australia must be vaccinated with their second dose at least seven days prior to travel. For now, two doses are considered fully vaccinated.

This week #4: Week beginning Monday 29 July
Behold! Four weeks in a row of saving things to read and writing about it all. Not all heros wear capes. A real mixture of stuff happening this week, including my starting as the interim Head of Digital at Bloodwise. Let’s do this 🔥🔥🔥 More on the ICO’s cookie guidance This week saw some movement on this on two fronts.
This week #1: Week beginning Monday 8 July
I’m going to try and start writing more. It’s a good way to get one’s head straight; reflect on things you’ve done or things you’ve read or things you might want to try. I’ve also got into this truly awful habit of emailing myself really interesting looking things to read and then *never actually reading them* — which is very poor form. Maybe committing to writing a short to medium length summary of reactions, thoughts and musings on stuff will force me to break that habit? Let’s see.
Moving on, and some things I’ve learnt.
Just over three years ago, I cleared my desk at Diabetes UK and trekked down Camden High Street towards Euston to start work at Sue Ryder. I thought I’d write a bit about what I’ve learnt in that time (and reflect a little too). Moving to Sue Ryder was a good opportunity for me to put into practice all the social media stuff I’d previously learnt and help make Sue’s social channels that little bit better.
