I used manual and electric typewriters in my first paid journalism jobs. It was often slow going.

Why did you become a journalist?
To make a positive difference in the world.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was a writer, although columnist would be more accurate if they had such a title. My first article was a cross between humor and fashion.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A six-part series chronicling the criminal corruption and moral depravity of an Illinois bishop.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be honest, thorough and fair. Unless you are an opinion writer, let no one guess how you vote by how you write.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A chance to interview a U.S. Marine pilot shot down during the Gulf War.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
A college writer was certain that it was newsworthy that he interviewed a famous Olympic athlete. I’d rather read his story.
What's your favorite drink?
Brandy old-fashioned (sweet), a Wisconsin supper club staple.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
It is very common for people to believe they won’t find serious journalism at a religious publication. Of course, this isn’t the case.
