SUE: The Future of Locating Buried Utilities Is Now
By Joseph Porter Investigating the underground world and depicting the findings has become a significant challenge as an ever-increasing plethora of utility infrastructure continues to age. As more utilities are installed in the ground, it is integral to identify and record information as it relates to gas, fiber, water, telecommunications, sewer and electric utilities to protect them and ensure the safety of field crews and private citizens.

SPHD As A Core Of An ETF Pre-Retirement Portfolio
I've said it before and I'll say it again: a serious all-ETF portfolio has to have at least one fund that focuses on large-cap equities. Clearly, an ETF that is based on the S&P 500 would work in that capacity, and as luck would have it, I have spent a bit of time lately on ETFs that are tied to the S&P in one way or another.1 One ETF has popped up frequently in my research, and I thought I would take a closer look at it.
2 New ETFs Try To Solve The Yield-Versus-Security Conundrum
In my last article I briefly discussed a new SPDR ETF by State Street Global Advisors - the SPDR S&P 500 High Dividend ETF (NYSEARCA:SPYD) - and expressed an interest in looking at it a bit closer. And here we are. In the course of researching SPYD, however, I ran across another new dividend-oriented ETF which also seemed to deserve a close look: Guggenheim Dow Jones Industrial Average Dividend ETF (NYSEARCA:DJD).
SPDR S&P 500 Large-Cap ETFs
As a reminder, I am currently doing a series of articles analyzing large-cap ETFs -- an effort to winnow the funds that look to have promise from those that look to fall short. The articles in the series are intended to be stand-alone, so readers can skip over ones that are of less interest to them. As I dig through the pile of ETFs (there are now more than 160), two things are becoming clear: At present, I seem to be focusing on groups of funds issued by the same firm.
Browne's Permanent Portfolio Vs. Porter's ETF Retirement Portfolio
My last article drew some rather critical comments, some of which were quite interesting;1 one comment in particular brought up the Harry Browne Permanent Portfolio - something I had not encountered before.2 In this article I take a look at the Harry Browne Permanent Portfolio (hereafter, HBPP), what it might look like populated with ETFs, and how it might perform. Harry Browne's strategy is articulated in his book, Fail-Safe Investing: Lifelong Financial Security in 30 Minutes.
Major Changes In My Retirement Portfolio
In May 2014, I set up a retirement portfolio (with my real money invested) made up only of ETFs ("5 ETFs For A Reliable Retirement Portfolio"), which was followed quickly by a modification ("Adjusting the ETF Retirement Portfolio"). The ultimate goal is to construct a portfolio that will: The initial portfolio consisted of the following five ETFs: PCEF was added to the portfolio in May, to replace iShares Moderate Allocation ETF (NYSEARCA:AOM), which I quickly got rid of.
Pursuing Smart Beta: Multi-Factored ETFs
In June, I wrote about the iShares FactorSelect MSCI International ETF (NYSEARCA:INTF), an ETF with an inception date of April 28, 2015.1 iShares introduced four other funds on that same date: the iShares FactorSelect MSCI Intl Small-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:ISCF), the iShares FactorSelect MSCI Global ETF (NYSEARCA:ACWF), the iShares FactorSelect MSCI USA ETF (NYSEARCA:LRGF) and the iShares FactorSelect MSCI USA Small-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:SMLF); as the names would suggest, all of the funds have...
Dogging The Dow: Mid-2015 Update
In January 2013, I began an experiment designed to see if using select fundamentals to separate a group of companies from the rest of their index would produce a portfolio that could outperform that index.1 My experiment involved building portfolios from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA, or "Dow") and the S&P 500. The fundamentals used for selection were chosen to highlight a company's efficiency, managerial effectiveness and financial responsibility.
BBP: A Specialized Biotech ETF With Excellent Potential
There are biotech ETFs on the market, but they are relatively few, with offerings by State Street/SPDR, BlackRock/iShares, Van Eck/Market Vectors and others.
SBIO: A Safe Play In Biotechnology?
The market is redolent with biotechnology-oriented ETFs, or so it seems. The ALPS Medical Breakthroughs ETF (NYSEARCA:SBIO) is intended to focus on companies that are actively engaged in biomedical research. SBIO, released two weeks after the BioShares funds, takes a broader approach to the biotechnology market; the fund limits its holdings to those biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies that have products in either phase II or phase III of clinical trials.
INTF: An Ideal Basket Of International Equities
For the past two years, I have been reluctant to invest outside the United States. This is not because I am a provincialist, a nationalist, or opposed to foreign businesses,1 but because the luster of the recovery from the "Great Recession" has faded.
Substantial Upside Potential With This Unique ETF
I want to examine what may be a unique ETF: BioShares Biotechnology Clinical Trials (NASDAQ:BBC). As with BBP, BBC is offered by LifeSci Index Partners under its BioShares banner; LifeSci and BioShares are affiliated with LifeSci Capital LLC, a company that focuses on investment banking and equity research, its services geared towards clients in the biotechnology industry. BBC is overseen by Paul Yook, who also manages BBP and was willing to share some time with me to discuss the funds.
5 Biotechnology Bargains Revisited
As I was researching the latest analysis for my ,1 I had occasion to check out an article I had written in November, 2013.2 Out of curiosity I checked how the companies I examined in the piece had been doing, and was pleasantly surprised.
