Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Never had a 'proper job'.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

It's a rapid, instant, continuous bombardment of news. This has many positives, and many negatives (e.g. factual accuracy in 'crisis' news.)

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

If she counts: MacKenzie McHale

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Curiosity.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#Coalicious -- in relation to coalition politics in the UK. Admittedly this simply shows the dire state of hashtag humour.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

With a fistful of cash. Alternatively by email/telephone.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Evernote, books, Twitter, Google's plethora of tools, Skype, iPhone, Lagavulin 16yr.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

On Twitter? About 100,000 more people.

Why did you become a journalist?

Advice from a favourite teacher of mine when I was very young.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

My secondary school didn't have a newspaper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A story and interview with an Iranian atheist on a plethora of topics: US foreign policy, nuclear weapons, Israel, the regime, among others.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

You should pick another career path. That goes for every student in my cohort; I'd like a damn job when I graduate.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm always online, so whenever. Preferably not in the early mornings (I work nights).
