Joseph T. O'Connor
VerifiedJoseph T. O'Connor’s Biography
Journalism has led me around the world in pursuit of stories. On each adventure - interviewing skiers on a mountain peak in Montana, reporting on doctors in a remote village in Haiti, or field producing on the rolling hills of England - I've learned more about myself and the craft I've been building upon for 20 years.
When Newsweek magazine published a high school essay I wrote in 1998, I was hooked. The moment sparked a lifelong affair. I've since published work in Skiing Magazine and CNN.com as well as in magazines and newspapers across the U.S. As a writer, I've used language to learn and explore. As an editor, I've forged strong relationships with a cadre of journalists, editors and publishers.
My media background is in print, digital and video formats, and I believe a multi-pronged approach to any story is the most effective way to reach the broadest audience. I enjoy working on collaborative projects, and thrive on digging into subjects, particularly interesting people, the environment, social justice and sports. As an organized and detail-oriented journalist with sound news judgment, I excel in editorial management as well as finding the heart of a story and seeing it through from the planning and development stage to the final edit.
From 2012 until 2022, I was head editor for Mountain Outlaw magazine, the Explore Yellowstone Guide and the Explore Big Sky newspaper in Big Sky, Montana, specializing in planning and executing content, including video, photography and design. In fall 2022, I was hired as Managing Editor for the environmental nonprofit journalism organization Mountain Journal.
