9 Things Christians Should Know about Profanity
What differentiates one word from another – making one word a profane word while another is considered normative? Why is one “four letter word” different from another one? It’s not always based on the precise definition of a word. Instead, it’s based on how that word has been used in the culture. Photo credit: ©GettyImages/mohd izzuan Slide 1 of 5 1. Profanity abuses vocabulary. Grammar matters.
6 Reasons Why There Are Few People Singing in Church
One of the great benefits of attending a Christian conference is undoubtedly the singing. Each year during the G3 Conference, I try to record some of the congregational singing just to file away and remember. This week as I listen through livestream to the T4G conference, it’s impressive to hear 10k people, mostly men, singing hymns of truth with passion and boldness.
Charles Spurgeon: Fruitless Faith
A man cannot really believe that Jesus Chris has taken away his sin by such sufferings as those of the cross, and yet trifle with sin. A man is a liar who says, “I believe that yonder bleeding Saviour suffered on account of my sins,” and yet holds good fellowship with the very sins that put Christ to death. Oh! sirs, a faith in the bleeding Saviour is a faith that craves for vengeance upon every form of sin.
Christ Crucified
The gospel to the Christian is a thing of power. What is it that makes the young man devote himself as a missionary to the cause of God, to leave father and mother, and go into distant lands? It is a thing of power that does it — it is the gospel. “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” — I Cor. i. 23, 24.
Divorce and remarriage: What does the Bible say?
By , Op-ed contributor Divorce and remarriage remain some of the most challenging and sensitive topics within the Church today. While modern culture has become increasingly permissive regarding the dissolution of marriage, Scripture upholds a high view of the marriage covenant. We are conditioned to view marriage as disposable. We receive these messages through public figures such as popular actors and actresses, celebrities, and even politicians.
Three Types of Immature Christians Who Hinder the Church
Anyone who is part of a church will encounter immature Christians along the way. The local church is God’s will for his people. God never saved anyone and sent them on a journey to heaven as a lone ranger. We need the local church as we journey onward. We must strive to see the privilege of membership in a local church and come to value it far more than we often do. Within the church, there are many different types of people.
Here's the secret to Bible reading in 2025
Read the Bible with a devotional heart in 2025. By , Op-ed contributor Many people set goals at the beginning of a new year, and one of the greatest goals at the beginning of the year is the goal to read the entire Bible in a calendar year. The path to success is organization. When it comes to anything in life, having the right tools for the job is extremely important. If I’m working on a vehicle or making a simple home repair without the proper tools, I often find myself frustrated.
Limited Atonement as the Theology of Christmas
One of the clear doctrines highlighted and emphasized at Christmas for obvious reasons is the doctrine of the incarnation. However, the doctrine of God taking upon himself human flesh in the person of Christ is not an isolated doctrine. Many people perhaps have not paused to consider the connection between the incarnation of Jesus and the doctrine of limited atonement.
Jesus of Nazareth: Why Is This Title Significant?
Jesus had to be born in Bethlehem in order to fulfill this ancient prophecy. This was the plan God had established before the foundation of the world. Therefore, in accordance with God’s plan, the ruling power of Caeser was used to call for a taxation that would require Joseph and Mary to comply with a deadline which would place them in the city of Bethlehem at the time of birth. God orders the steps of men, women, boys, and girls and governs the world according to his divine providence.
The Theology of Christmas: The Incarnation
The incarnation is the foundation of the Christian faith. In Jesus, the eternal Word became flesh, dwelt among us, revealed God’s glory, and brought grace and truth to a lost world. As we celebrate Christmas, let us marvel at the humility and majesty of Christ, who entered His creation to redeem it. And let us live in anticipation of the day when He will dwell with His people forever. Albert Einstein, one of the most brilliant minds in history, transformed our understanding of the universe.
The theology of Christmas: The Incarnation
By , Op-ed contributor Albert Einstein, one of the most brilliant minds in history, transformed our understanding of the universe. His theory of relativity reshaped physics, while his discovery of the photoelectric effect won him the Nobel Prize in 1921. Yet, for all his genius, Einstein famously dismissed trivial facts.
A Forgotten Martyr: Mrs. Agnes Prest
During her imprisonment, Mrs. Prest’s resilience continued to shine with amazement. She was offered the chance to recant and to return to her family and live a quiet life if she would only renounce her beliefs and submit to the Roman Catholic mass. But she refused.
Statement Regarding Steven Lawson and Trinity Bible Church
The waves of sin are often severe, and the impact is often far more broad than anyone would have imagined. In the aftershock of sin, emotions rage and disappointment presses people to assign blame. However, the blame game is a path that’s filled with many traps and snares. In recent days, various reports, articles, and podcasts were released that purported the idea that Steven Lawson was not a member of Trinity Bible Church.
The Bible and the Reformation
At the heart of the Reformation was the Bible, but not just the Bible translated, it was the Bible preached, taught, and explained. This was Luther’s commitment.
Too many misunderstand Cessationism
By , Op-ed contributor The subject of spiritual gifts falls within one of the most controversial and debated categories within modern day Evangelicalism. When it comes to the subject of spiritual gifts, what must be plain and obvious is that God continues to gift His church in our present day.
Remembering David Miller
When I was a young man, an evangelist by the name of David Miller would come to preach at our church every year. It was during those years that I became familiar with his preaching ministry. Over time, I would learn more about him, his disability, and as a student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, I would learn of his influence on the conservative resurgence of the Southern Baptist Convention. Words cannot express how this man has impacted my life.
The Fiery Preaching of John Knox
In God’s providence, John Knox led one of the most interesting lives of the Reformers. He was a preacher, a pastor, a galley-slave on a ship, a Bible translator, commentator, and a Reformer. It was during these years that he lived in various countries and served alongside some impressive figures—such as John Calvin in Geneva. John Knox’s preaching gift continued to be sharpened into a powerful voice for the glory of God.
Jesus: The Great High Priest
As Prophet, Jesus represents God to us by preaching the law and delivering the good news of hope to guilty sinners. As Priest, Jesus represents us to God by covering our sin with his blood and offering up a satisfactory sacrifice that is well pleasing to God. If you’ve spent much time around the zoo in a major city, you’ve likely noticed the numerous warning signs around the property.
A Prayer for America
The celebration of America’s birth should be something that all Americans come together to recognize. Without question, America is the greatest nation in the world. Although our nation is not perfect, the Lord has graciously blessed this land and the people who make up this land with unparallelled freedom and resources that has historically made this world a better place. Deep down within my heart, I’m a red blooded American. I have been raised in a nation of great freedoms and resources.
The threat to the SBC: Progressive Liberalism or Fundamentalism?
By , Op-ed contributor Just last week, the Southern Baptist Convention gathered together for their annual meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana to conduct business and make decisions as a group of churches on a variety of issues. During their time together, they were faced with the typical list of amendments and the reports from their various entities.
Why Christians cannot support the pride agenda
By , Op-ed contributor The month of June is historically the first full month of summer when families engage in vacations, BBQ, and baseball. However, in recent years, the month has been filled with rainbows and a public embrace of homosexuality. June has now been nicknamed, “Pride Month” in support of the LGBTQA+ agenda. Let’s be clear—there’s a massive agenda funded by corporations and government programs that demand equity.
When preaching leaves a church, Christ goes with it
By , Op-ed contributor For centuries leading up to the dawn of the Reformation era in the 16th century, the Roman Catholic Church had deformed the church of Jesus. The blueprint for the church as recorded in God’s inerrant and sufficient Word had been so distorted and disjointed, that the God ordained form of the church had been lost.
“No Creed but Christ”
While the Bible reigns as King in the library of human history and is all sufficient and authoritative, we must reject the shallow and deceitful little creed, “No creed, but Christ” that denies the importance of historic creeds and confessions and opens the door for false teachers to pervert the truths of God’s holy Word. Take your place in the long line of church history and confess the historic faith of the saints of old.
What Trump could do to make America great again
By , Op-ed contributor Every single year across our nation, hundreds of thousands of little babies are legally murdered after the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Abortion is a legally acceptable pay-to-murder industry. Today, sadly, it is still very possible to murder babies in the United States of America. In recent days, Donald Trump has been signaling that he will seek to accommodate certain groups by assuring that abortion will be accessible under certain circumstances.
The Preaching of Jesus Was Powerful and Relevant
As you listen to a preacher for any length of time, you will hear a constant theme or a reoccurring emphasis that continues to resurface over time. This common focus of a preacher spotlights an ongoing goal in his ministry. For instance, if you listen to any health, wealth, and prosperity preacher it’s very likely that you will hear something mentioned about money sooner rather than later.
Why Modern Prophecy Is False and God’s Word Is Inerrant and Sufficient: A Response to Sam Storms
Today, it’s a common thing to hear people claiming to hear messages from God. The “God told me” language is a cancer within the body of Christ that must be rooted out. This language is published in books, repeated in powerful stories by conference speakers, and is embraced as normative practices in many local churches and evangelical circles. At the 2023 G3 National Conference, the Cessationist documentary was publicly released.
The False Jesus of Mormonism
In the days of controversy surrounding the false teacher Arius and his heretical anti-Trinitarian doctrine, his followers would go through the streets singing a little song with these words, “There Was – When He Was Not.” The meaning of the song was clear. They believed the Father was when the Son was not. It was a song that attacked and denied the deity of Christ. It taught that Jesus was a created being separate from the Father. Athanasius was raised up by God for such a time.
Understanding a difficult saying of Jesus: 'Eat my flesh and drink my blood'
By , Op-ed contributor In the Gospel of John, a difficult saying emerges after a tremendous scene unfolds in the sixth chapter. Jesus miraculously feeds the 5,000 men plus their families with a small lunch taken from a young boy. The miracle left 12 baskets full of food after everyone had been filled with what Jesus provided the people. Immediately thereafter, Jesus stuns his disciples by approaching their boat on the rough sea as they were crossing over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
Does Hell Have Various Degrees of Punishment?
According to Christ, every word will be judged, which reveals that there will be a greater condemnation for some people than for others. In Luke 12:47-48, Jesus contrasts two servants who were given a command to follow, and one received a “severe beating” while another received a “light beating.” This too illustrates a difference in punishment that will be issued at the return of Christ.
How “He Gets Us” Fails to Get Jesus
The ”He Gets Us” campaign never presents the need for sinners to repent. Their campaign promotes works and service but it doesn’t present the good news of Jesus. The social gospel never saves, it only sooths people as they journey onward toward the gates of hell. The “He Gets Us” presents a Jesus who affirms rather than confronts. There is no message of repentance and no message of hope.
[SAT-2nd] Does Hell have various degrees of punishment?
By , Op-ed contributor The doctrine of Hell is one that is often neglected or avoided simply because of the weightiness and darkness of the subject. However, it’s critically important that Christians speak about Hell in the way that the biblical text speaks about Hell. Our doctrinal positions should be formed on the basis of Scripture rather than our feelings about a specific subject. Is your doctrine of Hell different than Jesus’ doctrine of Hell? What did Jesus teach about Hell?
The 3 perils of pornography
By , Op-ed contributor Throughout the years of pastoral ministry, one constant sin that has continued to surface during counseling sessions has been pornography. From young to old — it remains a massive pitfall for many men and an increasing number of women. In the Bible, we see a word used in the Greek “πορνεία” that is often translated as sexual immorality. From that term, we derive our English word, pornography. From this pit, many men and women have perished.
The Pit of Pornography

The Wolf Is Out of the Closet: Mark and Avoid Andy Stanley
Andy Stanley is a prominent mega-church pastor, author, and the founder of North Point Ministries, a multi-campus church model based in Alpharetta, Georgia. He was born on May 16, 1958, and is the son of Charles Stanley, a well-known pastor and founder of In Touch Ministries who once served as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention (1984-1986).
The Beginning Matters: Why the Attacks on Genesis Should Be Taken Seriously
Back in July of this year, I was invited by Answers in Genesis to join an invitation only group of Christian leaders for a trip down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. The trip was a 7-day journey through the massive rock walls of the Grand Canyon that covered nearly 200 miles of the Colorado river.
Lights, Stage and Altar: Assessing Trends in Modern Worship
It’s quite possible that you’ve walked into a church building in recent days and asked yourself why the church service felt more like a production than a worship service. Was it the lights or the musicians? Was it the pastor’s method of communication or his attire? What caused this question to be raised in your mind as you were seeking to worship God? The reality is, much change has occurred within evangelicalism within modern church history that necessitates explanation.
Two Dangers for the Church: Resisting Reform and Deforming Reformation
The church is in constant need of discernment in order to avoid catastrophic errors that lurk beneath the surface like an iceberg that can take down a ship. More than one church has disbanded because the church split and fractured due to theological and methodological error that sucked the life out of the body of Christ.
Baptist Doctrine and Christian Nationalism
As we look at the world around us, especially the world in America where I live, become more and more perverse and openly pagan, there’s a natural temptation to feel the growing tension and look for an immediate solution. In many cases, it leads Christians to embrace a “muscular version” of Christianity that stands against drag queen story hour and the latest LGBTQA+ pronoun madness.
Good Friday Was Not Cosmic Child Abuse
On Good Friday each year, Christians remember the most glorious sacrifice and the most horrific murder that ever occurred in human history. Why do we refer to the Friday after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday” and the Friday before Easter “Good Friday”? Should they be reversed? It’s the day set aside on the calendar to remember the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus for the sins of his people and the heinous murder of God’s Son. Why would we celebrate that day as a good day?
Three Things to Learn from John MacArthur at Shepherds’ Conference 2023
This week I had the privilege of attending the 2023 Shepherds’ Conference at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA where John MacArthur serves as pastor. As you know, Dr. MacArthur has served as pastor of this church since February 9th 1969. His legacy as the premiere expositor of the last 100 years is nearly unquestioned. As I reflect upon this week, a few things standout to me in terms of what I witnessed at this event.
Asbury Revival and the Local Church
On February 8th a chapel service at Asbury University sparked the beginning of an ongoing meeting that has continued for 13 days. It has been called a true movement of the Holy Spirit and a genuine revival. Recently, leadership at Asbury have announced a plan to end the movement and return to normal campus life schedules which have been completely disrupted over the last two weeks. People have been filling up the auditorium and flooding the campus at Asbury for the last two weeks.
Why Christians Should Support the Abolition of Abortion
For many years I supported the incremental approach to opposing abortion and advocating for the preborn. However, in recent years, I’ve become much more aware of the fact that incrementalism and the pro-life movement will never fully abolish abortion. Now with the fall of Roe v. Wade on a national level, it’s essential for Christians to work together to abolish abortion and to protect the preborn.
Human Composting and the Sanctity of the Human Body
A new trend has emerged that has gained traction in some states as a healthy and cost effective alternative to traditional burial. This new trend is called human composting and it’s likely to gain momentum in the upcoming year. I was asked by Ben Zeisloft of The Daily Wire to provide comments on this practice which he cited in his article yesterday. How should Christians think about this new green burial practice?
The Necessity to Prioritize the Local Church
Do you place a priority upon the gathering, worship, and fellowship of the local church? If not, it could be an indicator that something is not right spiritually. A lack of commitment to your local church could be indicative of pride, laziness, slothfulness, and a refusal to submit to proper biblical discipleship and accountability. Since Jesus laid down his life for the church, we know what God thinks about the church.
Share Your Testimony: Why Parents Must Tell Children Their Faith Stories
ShareTweetPinPocketFlipboard Why is it so important to share your testimony with your own children? As life passes quickly and children grow older, they formulate their opinion about their parents. In fact, they formulate their opinion about everything they see and experience. They know facts about you, your house, the leaky faucet, the squeaky floors. And that’s all a normal part of life. As kids build knowledge about the family, what do they know about you? Do they know about your job?
Can We Trust What the Bible Says?
Perhaps you’ve ran into skeptics of the Bible who insist that it’s chock full of errors and contradictions. Maybe you have a friend at work who refuses to listen to you as you attempt to share the gospel because he claims the Bible is a book written by men containing tons of mistakes and errors. There is no person more committed to that type of language than the New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman.
Discerning the Difference Between Theological Error and Heresy
The church for generations, in fact from the very beginning, has experienced fights, feuds, differences of opinions, skirmishes, and theological wars over doctrinal error. In many cases throughout history, the church has been forced to deal with these issues in a way that demands separation from those who hold to false doctrine. Such separation necessitates a clear label as a warning to everyone. That label has been properly designated as heresy.
When Evangelical Silence Is Louder than a Virtue Signal
On Friday, June 24th 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States of America issued a ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Justices ruled 6-3 to overturn the legal right to abortion on a national level and turned it back over to the individual states. Not only was this a bombshell decision handed down by the Court, but it was one that has now rocked the nation resulting in protest, violence, and shock.
Will Egalitarianism Rule the SBC?
In recent days following the 2022 SBC, the debate over the office and function of pastor has reached a boiling point. One of the points that I’ve sought to labor over the last four years is that social justice is about far more than racism (ethnic prejudice). It’s likewise far more than women preachers too. That’s what makes social justice such a powerful force to be reckoned with.
Why Should You Fight for Biblical Truth?
by | Jun 2, 2022 | Featured, The Gospel and the Christian Life There are always at least two different paths to choose from in life. Typically, one is much easier than the other, and that certainly is the case in the Christian life. Why do you think John Bunyan pictured Christian as one who was always put in a position to take the easier path rather than the more difficult or, the more dangerous route? He was basing his story on the journey of faith as depicted in the pages of God’s Word.
