George Washington's tour of Long Island
In the spring of 1790, just a year after his inauguration as the first president of the United States, George Washington took a break from his presidential duties in Manhattan and set out on a brief tour of Long Island. While the exact details of Washington's trip have been clouded by legend over time, here are some of the spots he’s believed to have visited, along with some of the notes he made in the journal he kept along the way.

Traffic was backed up for two miles on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley on Monday, July 5, 1982, when officials informed beachgoers en route to Smith Point County Park that the parking lot was full. Instead of turning around, many motorists were undeterred and decided to spend the last day of a long Fourth of July weekend as planned. They parked their vehicles on the parkway and walked across the Smith Point Bridge to the ocean on the other side.
Australians evacuated, robbed in Rio's Olympic Village
Once again, it seems, an Olympic Village is not quite ready for prime time. In Rio, the Australian team is having a bad experience with their accommodations for the games. First, the Aussies refused to move into their living quarters, citing blocked toilets, exposed wires and leaky pipes, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
