What will I miss if I catch up on Metal Gear Solid now?
Many of the older games in the Metal Gear series were released before the modern trend of pre-order bonuses and collector's editions and such. All of the following games had no pre-order or collector's edition content of any notable form, in any version or format they were released in (that I'm aware of or have been able to track down). Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was the first game to have such content.
How do I implement a password-based savegame system?
First, break down your game state (or rather, the aspects of the state you want to save). In the case of a Mega Man style game, you might track which of the end-level bosses you've killed, the number of energy-tank-like powerups you have, and so on. Pack all of that data into a bit field, that is, assign an appropriate number of bits to each value: Our example has 8 bits total, which means a single character can represent a password.
Why does editing the client's memory in some MMOs allow them to cheat?
Why editing the memory of the game client works? Why so many "Hack protection" tools coming with the clients? If I were to design a client-server game, everything would happen at the server (the simulation of the game world) and clients would be only passive consumers receiving status updates of the part of the world near their characters, sending only some information like keystrokes or move/action commands.
How can I tell a fragment shader to not write a particular pixel?
In a WebGL I'd like to send a screen space quad through that gets processed by a fragment shader, but have the fragment shader only write out a pixel under certain conditions (say... that it was within a circle, or that the pixel belonged to the positive side of a halfspace defined by a curve equation or something). Is it possible within a fragment shader to say "don't write a pixel"?
How can I avoid permission-related failures when importing in Photos.app via AppleScript?
The new Photos.app does not come with Automator support (although there are third-party actions available). It does, however, have some basic AppleScript support, including support for importing a list of files. However, I can't get this action to work correctly. Any attempts to use it, such as via the following simple script will cause Photos.app to report that "no metadata" could be retrieved from the file because it may not be a photo (however, the same file can be manually imported).
The Road Ahead
Welcome to the second week of the new GameDev.net It appears I've done a fairly decent job this last week staying on top of everything and keeping you all informed, and I aim to continue doing so in the weeks and months to come as myself and the team continue to work on improving the website - both in terms of what we have planned and what you want to see happen to existing content/features. As before, I encourage everyone to keep all discussion about the website in this Lounge thread.
