Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I grew up writing on typewriters. I remember when the IBM Selectric III came out and we were amazed by it.
How is social media changing news?
It changes news by shaping interpretation. It does not report events, it interprets them.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Jake Barnes from Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email - always
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I have no idea. I just always hope that, whatever it is, it keeps working.
What's your favorite social network?
I don't really prefer one over another. I find them all equally useful and equally bothersome, actually.
Why did you become a journalist?
My father was a journalist in radio and I grew up listening to him interview people and explore events.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not write for the school paper regularly but did contribute articles and editorials.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A piece long ago on saving a building which was historically relevant and another on saving Civil War battlegrounds.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Never give up. Seriously. That's it. Never give up. If you want to do it, do it and don't stop until you've gotten where you wanted to go.
What's your favorite drink?
Beer - especially St. Pauli Girl beer - though I am also partial to Scotch and Scottish brews.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Exploring ancient ruins with my wife and daughter or roaming the woods with my dogs.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Pretty much anything related to history and philosophy.
