Boston Area Small Press and Poetry Scene
Petition By Joyce Peseroff Carnegie Mellon University Press Pittsburgh, MA ISBN: 978-0-88748-661-6 74 Pages Review by Dennis Daly Petitions are like prayers, only they are addressed with more certitude. Humanity seems no more capable of reforming itself in the name of itself or its favorite deity than a distracted Almighty, who has clearly moved on to newer and more interesting subjects. Nevertheless, the very act of petition engenders sympathetic audiences of listeners and possibilities.
Boston
My father found himself in Boston once, ten thousand myths away from Oklahoma. I think of him standing on the rim of the Atlantic, the horizon vertical as it describes the Upperworld and the Underworld. It was the water that attracted him, as if he were some kin to the Watermonster, as if he'd heard the stories and the monster was the only one who could approximate the turmoil of knowledge. And there was a woman involved.
Layover
In the Pittsburgh airport which is not in Pittsburgh I am looking for a good book. Past the luggage carousel the latest models from Detroit revolve, displayed like wedding cakes, temptation to change horses in midstream. Once I was here, being returned to Boston like a book read, reread, enough to loosen the spine & slightly overdue. Under the monitors we shared a drink & sat like parting lovers; upset, you left your new sunglasses at the table.
The Ploughshares Poetry Reader
Begun in 1971, Boston's outstanding little magazine, Ploughshares, has become one of the most important literary forums in the country. The Ploughshares Poetry Reader celebreates the best of the peotry published in Ploughshares' first eleven volumes, and reflects, given Ploughshares' unique concept of "rotating editors," the editorial commitment to many of our finest writers.
Little Kisses by Lloyd Schwartz
In the final section of his eagerly anticipated new book, Lloyd Schwartz writes, “The older I get, the less and less/I understand this world,//and the people in it.” (“To My Oldest Friend, Whose Silence Is Like a Death”).
“April to May,” by Joyce E. Peseroff
Joyce E. Peseroff’s poem “April to May” appeared in our Spring 1979 issue. Her latest collection is Know Thyself. 1. It is cold enough for rain to coagulate & fall in heavy drops. Tonight a skin of ice will grow over the bones of the smallest bush, making it droop like the wrist of someone carrying a heavy suitcase. This moving on, from season to season, is exhausting & violent, the break from the Berlin Wall of winter especially.
Three Days with Gabo
Distressed by what he saw happening to Latin American journalism, Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel laureate author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and a former newspaper reporter himself, started in March 1995 what he describes as “a school without walls”—the Foundation for a New Ibero-American Journalism. Its purpose is to rejuvenate, through traveling workshops, journalism in the region.
