Three steps to ready your business for the future of work
For employees around the world, the gradual return to work is far from back to business as usual. Forrester predicts that 70 per cent of companies will pivot to an ‘office plus anywhere’ work hybrid model in which at least some employees can work anywhere they want for part of the week while spending the remaining days in an office. Just as the workplace itself is changing shape, so too is the working style, technology and management demands of the people within them.

How employers can prepare for the future of work
Forrester’s JP Gownder discusses the steps employers need to take to get the most out of the new world of hybrid working. As employees across the UK and Ireland steadily make their way back to offices, it’s becoming increasingly clear that those workplaces won’t look like they did before Covid-19. Neither will the working style, technologies or management demands of the people within them.

Make the future of work a strategic competency
Contrary to popular belief, the future of work isn’t something that happens to you or your firm. It’s not merely some new technology your organisation will eventually get around to adopting. In fact, there’s no single future of work – there will be many, built in the context of specific problems. But here’s the key: the future of work is a strategic imperative that you must actively create for your company, your employees, and your own career.

The future of work is an adaptive workforce
To build an adaptive enterprise you have to build an adaptive workforce, writes Forrester’s JP Gownder. The future of work isn’t something that happens to you, it’s something you create for your company and your own career. Unfortunately, C-level technology and business leaders are often uncertain on how to do it. Forrester recently released the report, ‘The Adaptive Workforce Will Drive the Future of Work’, establishing a blueprint for how to get there.
RQ - The measure of organizational readiness for automation and AI
We’ve just released a major new report, “RQ: Assess Your Readiness For Working Side By Side With Robots And AI.” Automation technologies — from AI to robotic process automation (RPA), physical robotics, and more — are transforming business processes and operating models. But most companies don’t have the competencies to implement automation technologies successfully.
Automation Technologies, Robotics, And Artificial Intelligence In The Workforce
Last week, McDonald's shares hit an all-time high, bouyed by Wall Street's expectations that investments in automation technologies will drive business value: As part of its "Experience of the Future" initiative, McDonald's announced plans to roll out digital ordering kiosks that will replace cashiers in 2,500 of its locations. The company will also extend its customer self-service efforts, deploying mobile ordering at 14,000 locations.
Marketing With Virtual Reality
Moonlighting as a contributor to our CMO role’s research, I’ve just published a major new report about how virtual reality will affect marketers, collaborating with Forrester's lead on digital disruption, James McQuivey, PhD. CMOs and other marketers have four choices when it comes to virtual reality (VR). Most of you should wait and see, because there’s no business imperative to invest scarce time and resources in VR this year.
Google Invites Us To "Daydream" In Virtual Reality
At Google I/O today, the company announced a new mobile-centric VR offering called Daydream. The nicely-named Daydream VR builds off of a mobile device platform, much as the Samsung Gear VR add-on device does for Samsung S7 smartphones. Daydream combines three elements: Android N smartphones optimized for VR. As Samsung has shown, it takes a high-end smartphone with deep pixel density and great graphics performance to effectively drive VR experiences.
Microsoft Fights Back In Education
Today, Microsoft's Terry Myerson announced the new strategy for Windows in the classroom. Windows 10 -- which is now Windows-as-a-service, with periodic updates delivered from the cloud -- will see a big feature update this summer with the Windows Anniversary Update, announced a few weeks ago at the BUILD developer conference. Now we're learning about the education-specific features that will take on Chromebooks.
Oculus’ Botched Launch Harms The VR Ecosystem
April 12, 2016: The day Oculus updated its Rift shipment timeframe for customers. As has been widely reported, Oculus customers face widespread months-long delays in the deliveries of their virtual reality headset purchases.
Reality Check: Virtual Reality Isn’t A Real Market. Yet.
You’re probably hearing a lot of endless, excessive and short-term virtual reality (VR) hype. For example, at SXSW 2016, a great deal of time and energy is being devoted to VR experiments, new media announcements, and demonstrations. The reality? The vast majority of consumers aren’t there yet, don’t know or care about VR, and won’t know or care in 2016 unless they are hardcore gamers. And only a few forward-looking enterprises – digital predators – are experimenting with VR in effective ways today.
Why 2016 Will Be The Year Of Digital Signage And Displays
I've just published a major new report, The Digital Signage And Display Opportunity in 2016. I'll also be holding a webinar on this topic on Tuesday, January 26th, 1-2pm ET USA; it's entitled Screening the World: How Digital Signage, Displays, and Magic Mirrors Drive Business Value. Please register for my webinar here. Since Forrester was founded in 1983, we've never had a coverage area on digital signage ̶ until now. Why?
The Broken Promise of IoT -- And What To Do About It
My colleague Michele Pelino and I have just published a major new report, Bridge The Broken Internet Of Things Promise. At its best, the Internet of Things (IoT) -- a catch-all term for technologies that enable objects and infrastructure to interact with monitoring, analytics, and control systems over Internet-style networks -- has the potential to reshape customer experiences.
Robots Will Soon Be Parking Your Car
During our research for the Forrester Big Idea report The Future of Jobs, 2025: Working Side-by-Side with Robots, we spoke with not one, but two different vendors that automate parking garages, Boomerang and Serva Transport Systems. Rather than explain, I'd invite you to watch a few seconds of the following video, which depicts how Serva TS robots park cars -- all cars -- at the Dusseldorf airport in Germany: Looks a bit like sci-fi, right? But it's happening right now.
Robots Won't Steal All The Jobs -- But They'll Transform The Way We Work
This morning, WIRED published an article about my new Forrester Big Idea report, The Future of Jobs, 2025: Working Side-By-Side With Robots. You're probably familiar by now with the panic-stricken books (like Martin Ford's Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future) and headlines (HBR's What Happens When Robots Replace Workers?) proclaiming that the future of employment is bleak because of the rise of automation technologies.
Differentiate Your Digital Business With An Innovation Lab
I've just released a significant new report, How To Build The Innovation Center That Differentiates Your Business. I interviewed companies from a variety of verticals – travel, retail, energy, clothing, financial services – and spoke to thought leaders in innovation theory to help I&O leaders solve a series of problems: How can we innovate using customer-facing interaction technologies such as mobile devices, robotics, digital signage, and virtual reality (VR)?
Global Tablet Forecast: Consumer Is Volatile But Business Tablets Are Resilient
Tablets, once the darling of the consumer electronics industry, have hit hard times -- if you measure by shipments and sales. While the installed user base continues to grow -- Forrester forecasts that 580 million people will be using tablets globally by the end of 2015 -- shipment numbers have been disappointing, even looking at Apple's iPad. In Q2, 2015, Apple sold 12.62 million iPads, a whopping 23% drop compared with Q2, 2014 when the company sold 16.35 million.
The Quantified Workforce Drives Improved Productivity And Safety
You've probably heard about the Quantified Self (QS), a movement that aims to capture, analyze, and act upon data from the human body in the interest of better health, fitter athletes, and sharper minds. Today, QS is giving way to QW -- Quantified Workforce. A variety of technologies -- devices, software, services -- can quantify the health, fitness, mental acuity, timeliness, and collaboration of workers. Many of these services are ready for prime time, but present some challenges in implementing.
Microsoft HoloLens Is A World-Changing Mixed Reality Product
It’s not often that a new product release has the potential to reshape the way people work and play. The PC, the browser, the smartphone – all of these products fell into that category. Microsoft’s new HoloLens has the potential to do the same. (Check out some photos from Gizmodo here -- they don't live up to the actual experience even a little bit). Yes, that’s a big claim.
What I&O Leaders Should Look For At CES
This weekend, I’ll be heading off to Las Vegas for the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Infrastructure & Operations leaders should – and do – keep tabs on the news coming out of CES. In this era of consumerization, bring-your-own (BYO) technology, and Shadow IT, CES announcements affect the I&O role more than ever before. I have three tips for how to think about CES 2015: Look at consumer technologies through a workforce lens. So many smart, connected products quickly migrate to the workforce.
