Cunningham backs Rebecca Amidon in Michigan Senate race
TO THE EDITOR: I have known Rebecca Amidon, who is running for state Senate (District 32), for almost 10 years. She lives in Manistee County with her husband and two young children. Article continues below this ad At one point her family lost their medical insurance and struggled with medical debt. This is easy to do if you have young children and lose a job, then your health insurance coverage, even temporarily.
Cunningham urges voters to check absentee ballot status
TO THE EDITOR: Absentee ballots are being mailed out for the primary election now. But receiving your ballot is not guaranteed. Trump issued an executive order to prevent the U.S. Post Office from delivering absentee ballots to voters not on an “approved” voter list. A federal judge has blocked the ruling for now, but the Trump administration will keep pushing to get this carried out. Article continues below this ad It seems that Trump will not accept a loss.
Cunningham: Citizens demand justice after ICE fatalities
TO THE EDITOR: I have been very upset, like most of us, with the violence in Minneapolis and the killing by federal immigration agents of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were expressing their First Amendment right to free speech. This includes protest rallies and recording on camera the actions of ICE troops. Jan.
Medicaid cuts spur letter urging Medicare for all in Michigan
TO THE EDITOR: Health is necessary for life. Does that make healthcare a fundamental human right or a privilege for the wealthy? Americans began this debate more than 20 years ago when it became clear to the majority that a private for-profit healthcare system was not affordable for most working families. It resulted in the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.
Cunningham: Worried about Manistee’s urgent care gap
TO THE EDITOR: Does Manistee have adequate medical care for visiting tourists? A recent experience left me very concerned. A friend was here for a visit of a few months. He is in his 80s and diabetic. He became ill and felt it was serious enough to seek medical care so he headed to the emergency room. Article continues below this ad After hearing his complaint, the emergency room staff said they do not treat this type of ailment and referred him to the “urgent care” facility in Ludington.
Cunningham: Attacks on federal services, budget cuts will affect all of us
TO THE EDITOR: Our president has given carte blanche power to the world’s richest man to dismantle our federal government. Our president is running roughshod over the rule of law and the constitution. He is using the current chaos caused by Musk and the band of unqualified misfits he has chosen to serve on his cabinet as a diversion.
Cunningham reflects on MLK's legacy and Trump's second term
TO THE DITOR: Monday was both Martin Luther King Day and the inauguration of Donald Trump for his second term as president. Reverend King will be remembered for preaching the Christian message of God’s love and being inspired by Mahatma Gandhi to use non-violent resistance to end segregation and gain the right to vote for people of color in the United States during the 1950s and '60s. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Fructose replacement of glucose or sucrose in food or beverages lowers postprandial glucose and insulin without raising triglycerides: a systematic review and meta-analysis
