EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was written after an in-person interview with Allen King on Oct. 7, 2022, though some information and quotes came from a provided copy of his autobiography, “Allen’s Life Story.” Walking into Allen King’s apartment, it’s obvious he is a well-educated, well-traveled man. Thick, non-fiction books line the bookcase. A fish fossil from Wyoming, a painting purchased from an Indonesian street peddler and a Costa Rican tapestry decorate the walls.

Letter: Unaccountable cruelty
By Judy Hubbard, Vancouver Published: December 30, 2019, 6:00am Columnist Eugene Robinson’s heart-breaking story about 16-year-old Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez falling through the cracks of our judicial system is beyond tragic (“Teen migrant’s death a crime,” Dec. 13). For a very ill boy to be put into a cold cell and then ignored for the next 12 to 15 hours only to die alone on a cement floor is unforgivable.
Letter: Herrera Beutler is not listening
By Judy Hubbard, Vancouver Published: November 15, 2019, 6:00am The Columbian’s coverage of Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s time listening to the local war veterans’ stories was commendable (“Veterans share their stories,” The Columbian, Nov. 9). They need to be heard. But why does this feel like an election publicity stunt? I wish that she had as much respect for her district constituents. Is she not concerned about President Trump’s diversion of veteran charity funds back into his election expenses?
Letter: Trump is beyond understanding
By Judy Hubbard, Vancouver Published: September 28, 2019, 6:00am President Donald Trump has mocked Greta Thunberg after her passionate, near-tears plea to the United Nations to take action on the climate-change issue. He now tops my list for insensitive, cruel and evil human beings on this planet. How an adult can treat a teenager in this manner is beyond understanding. Letter: Main issue: Ban assault weapons
By Judy Hubbard, Vancouver Published: August 9, 2019, 6:00am The headline “Pair of mass shootings shock U.S.” (Aug. 5, Associated Press) was not correct. I speak for myself, but also for my friends with whom I commiserated the day after the shootings. We were not “shocked.” We are sickened, we are depressed, we are angry and we are fed up with the lack of action of our government.
