Does salinity make a difference-Kidney anatomy of Saimaa (Pusa saimensis) and Baltic ringed seals (Pusa hispida botnica)
1 INTRODUCTION The multilobed kidneys of pinnipeds and cetaceans are reniculate, consisting of numerous reniculi, each corresponding to a lobe or a unilobar kidney.
Does salinity make a difference—Kidney anatomy of Saimaa ( Pusa saimensis ) and Baltic ringed seals ( Pusa hispida botnica )
1 INTRODUCTION The multilobed kidneys of pinnipeds and cetaceans are reniculate, consisting of numerous reniculi, each corresponding to a lobe or a unilobar kidney.
Realisation threshold revisited: does the minimum tooth size scale with body size?
Abstract Based on his analyses of lynx and brown bear teeth, Bjorn Kurten coined the concept of 'realisation threshold', the smallest size at which a tooth can form and erupt properly. Kurten found the smallest sizes of the studied lynx and bear teeth to be 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm, respectively, much larger than for example the smallest rodent teeth known to readily erupt.
Morphology of sweat glands in the skin of Saimaa (Pusa hispida saimensis) and Baltic ringed (Pusa hispida botnica) seals
1 INTRODUCTION The protective skin is the largest mammalian organ, with physical, sensory, immunological, and thermoregulatory functions. Hair follicle microstructure varies little between seal species (Bergersen, 1931; Ling, 1968, 2018; Montagna & Harrison, 1957; Sokolov, 1960, 1962; Troll-Obergfell, 1930), but differences in the seasonal proliferative and secretory activity or quiescence of hair follicles and associated skin glands may affect the structure depending on sampling timing.
Comparison of chemical and enzymatic maceration processes for soft tissue removal from arterial silicone casts on skull scaffolds
1 INTRODUCTION Various corrosion cast and other models are routinely used in gross anatomical studies and teaching to improve the visualization of blood vessels (Anderson et al., 1989; Cirak et al., 2021; Kiełtykaka-Kurz et al., 2015; Meyer et al., 2007; Sanan et al., 1999; Zdun et al., 2019). Depending on the purpose of the model, the specimen may be fixed and soft tissues removed only to a degree to allow visualization of the routes of blood vessels among the soft tissue (Cirak et al., 2021).
Anatomical variations in the cerebral arterial circle of the Saimaa (Pusa hispida saimensis) and Baltic ringed seals (Pusa hispida botnica)
1 INTRODUCTION Two arterial systems supply the vertebrate brain. The anterior carotid system derives from the internal carotid artery and irrigates the forebrain. The posterior vertebral system derives from the vertebral arteries and mainly supplies the brainstem (Fenrich et al., 2021).
