Searchlight New Mexico is a non-partisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to investigative reporting in New Mexico. Antoinette Rodriguez’s last in-person home visit was March 6, when she drove 50 miles to see a mother and her eight children in Standing Rock, on the Navajo Nation. Five days later, the mother inexplicably disappeared, leaving the children’s grandmother and uncle to care for the kids. Rodriguez knew nothing about that when she called the mom’s cell phone a month later for an update. She only found out the next time she visited in person.
For struggling teens who believe they are out of options, there is help
For 20-year-old Ashley Brundige, it started with a case of severe depression. “I felt sad and hopeless, and some days it was for no reason at all,” the Albuquerque resident recalled. “I couldn’t do anything to make it better, so I would just sit in my room. It wasn’t a [feeling] I wanted, but at the time, I was going through so much and was so confused by the emotions I had. I didn’t have enough understanding or help with it.
CEO Barbie and the reality of what women face
I recently came across a tidbit of information online that truly worried me. I read that the first woman to show up in a Google image search for “CEO” is none other than CEO Barbie. This was hidden amid countless articles about women in business, sexual harassment and workplace safety. Of course, there are endless factoids that tend to scare women and girls with any kind of desire for success.
A path to the stage
Sophie Quay de la Vallee’s parents used to take her to The Santa Fe Opera every summer when she was kid. And no matter which opera she saw, or what language it was performed in, she always knew how the evening would end.She no longer feels that way about opera. In fact, today she works as the house manager at The Santa Fe Opera. She grew up in a very musical family as the youngest of four children, all of whom played an instrument.
My View: The road to finding work that I love - The Santa Fe New Mexican: Teen
When I was 14 years old, I had already compiled a list of jobs I was ready to try, which ranged from teaching to working as a waitress. A friend and I fantasized about saving our money to travel and buy cars. I began with volunteer work. I spent the summer before high school volunteering around Santa Fe and learned a lot from each experience. At the Santa Fe Farmers Market, I learned how to quickly calculate correct change.
My View: These girls make me smile - The Santa Fe New Mexican: Teen
As a child, I loved my baby-sitters. It was with those older girls that I learned to draw the princesses in my imagination, how to correctly pronounce “cream of tartar,” and discovered new and imaginary worlds outside my home. Because of these experiences, I grew up wanting to be just like them. So, as soon as I turned 12 years old, I took the American Red Cross Babysitting and Child Care Training. I was the youngest in the class and took the CPR and emergency protocol advice very seriously.
Abusive relationships lie in the shadows of love - The Santa Fe New Mexican: Teen
“To be honest, I don’t think that my first unhealthy relationship was that bad. Compared to what some people go through, it was a cakewalk, but that’s kind of my point. Unhealthy relationships don’t have to be extreme to be unhealthy.” In retrospect, it’s easy for Kate — a local senior who doesn’t want her full name printed — to realize that the boy she was dating was slowly breaking down her self-esteem. My View: Old buildings add to appeal of East Coast schools - The Santa Fe New Mexican: Teen
The buildings were my favorite part. I was enchanted by the old brick structures that rose up from beautiful grassy lawns. For me, the college application process began with a whirlwind of a week in which I made my way from one beautiful brick college to another by planes, trains, taxis and foot. I had scheduled this week of college visits months in advance and had thoroughly planned out each tour, information session and meeting.
