In early versions of the web (think Web 1.0), webpages were built mostly with HTML and image files. Modern websites, however, are much more dynamic, particularly when loading content. That means traditional timing metrics, while still critical, don’t provide a full picture of the overall user experience.
Selenium is a suite of services and tools you can use to run scripted automation tests in web browsers to verify the functionality of your web applications. Writing Selenium scripts can be challenging, but they get especially complicated if your script needs to find and select page elements that have been altered by backend changes or by dynamic changes via a JavaScript or CSS library.
New Relic is a software as a service (SaaS) offering, so our users’ primary interaction with us occurs through their web browsers. Unfortunately, we can’t support every browser that’s available, and we also can’t manually test every version of the browsers we do support. But we do support applications on eight different browsers across three different platforms, so automated cross-browser testing is essential to our ability to ship products with browser-based points of interaction.
