Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was the Public Affairs Assistant at the Naval Station at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Then, to Naval Aviation News Magazine.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

At DINFOS, we learned to type of blacked-out key typewriters. That was in 1985. Of course!

How is social media changing news?

Two immediate ways is that SM has given everyone the ability to report news. It also provides immediate access to multiple sources.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Alex Haley and I attended the same Journalism school. How could I not be partial to him?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means I get to tell the stories that connect our military and civilian members with our external audience members.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

No response.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

If something is happening that impacts our workforce, I write about it.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I'm a prodigy of Aldus Pagemaker. While I don't use it much these days, I still have the disks that go with it. Now, I use Publisher.

What's your favorite social network?

I routinely use Facebook to promote activities occurring at my place of employment.

Who do you wish followed you?

We have more than 800 followers. I would enjoy it if the Facebook followers followed me here.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was a jet engine mechanic and I wrote about everything I fixed. A career counselor suggested I change jobs. I wrote about that too! :-)

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

There are so many that immediately come to mind. I wrote an article on the A6-EB Prowler aircraft. Incredible.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

You must a passion for this. Non-journalists didn't enjoy the White House correspondent's dinner in 2019. I LOVED it.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm open 24/7.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I once wrote an article about Lt. Cmdr. Beth E. Hubert, the Navy's first jet test pilot. It was my first article published in NANews mag.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

It probably had something to do with the Army Navy Game.

What's your favorite drink?

Believe it or not, I'm a water drinker. Restaurants, at home, in the car - I never leave home without it.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

One of two places, reading a hard copy book or in my basement gym preparing for powerlifting events.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I'm a book guy. I'm currently reading three books but I just finished Washington's Crossing. Who would have thought I'd be a history buff?

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That military members don't pay taxes. This is simply not true. Ask Uncle Sam, or any retiree, Veteran or Active Duty member!
