Heat-to-Electricity Conversion Using Barium Strontium Titanate Multilayer Capacitors
1 Introduction Electricity is emerging as a key contributor to meeting energy service demand in every scenario [1]. A typical example is the rapid advancement and widespread application of artificial intelligence technologies, making the need for a sustainable power supply more urgent than ever. At present, global electricity production is dominated by thermal-to-electric conversion [2], yet a large share of input energy is rejected as waste heat [3].
Antiferroelectric thin films embedded with ferroelectric switching loop for giant negative electrocaloric effect
Abstract INTRODUCTION RESULTS DISCUSSION MATERIALS AND METHODS Acknowledgments Supplementary Materials REFERENCES Information & Authors Metrics & Citations View Options References Figures Tables Media Share Abstract The ferroics combine the single-hysteresis loop of ferroelectrics with the double-hysteresis loop of antiferroelectrics to form multiple hysteresis loops, which could substantially advance energy storage, electrocaloric cooling, and nonvolatile multistate memory technologies.
pH-Driven Modulation of Microbial Community Structure and Functional Succession in Fallen Oak Logs
1 Introduction Deadwood plays a crucial role in carbon (C) cycling, accounting for approximately 27% of the total C sink in boreal forests (Pan et al. 2011; Reichstein et al. 2013). Wood consists of about 45% cellulose, 30% hemicellulose and 25% lignin (Yang and Berglund 2021), and its decomposition requires specialised microbial communities, particularly wood decaying fungi (Boddy 2000; Boddy and Heilmann-Clausen 2008).

Low‐Cost Lightweight Quartz Fiber‐Reinforced Hybrid Aerogel Nanocomposite for High‐Temperature Oxidation Thermal Protection
1 Introduction As deep-space exploration advances, the requirements for aerodynamic shape retention, lightweight, thermal insulation, and long-term serviceability of thermal protection systems are growing in harsh service environments characterized by high heat flux, high enthalpy, and prolonged aerodynamic heating.[1] Under these circumstances, low-density ablative thermal protection materials are gaining attention for their low thermal conductivity and lightweight structure.[2-5]...

Large harvested energy with non-linear pyroelectric modules - Nature
Abstract Coming up with sustainable sources of electricity is one of the grand challenges of this century. The research field of materials for energy harvesting stems from this motivation, including thermoelectrics1, photovoltaics2 and thermophotovoltaics3. Pyroelectric materials, converting temperature periodic variations in electricity, have been considered as sensors4 and energy harvesters5,6,7, although we lack materials and devices able to harvest in the joule range.
Colossal Reversible Barocaloric Effects in Layered Hybrid Perovskite (C10H21NH3)2MnCl4 under Low Pressure Near Room Temperature
Abstract Barocaloric effects in a layered hybrid organic–inorganic compound, (C10H21NH3)2MnCl4, that are reversible and colossal under pressure changes below 0.1 GPa are reported. This barocaloric performance originates in a phase transition characterized by different features: A strong disordering of the organic chains, a very large volume change, a very large sensitivity of the transition temperature to pressure and a small hysteresis.
Reversible barocaloric effects over a large temperature span in fullerite C60
Reversible barocaloric effects over a large temperature span in fullerite C60 Solid-state cooling methods based on field-driven first-order phase transitions are often limited by significant hysteresis and small temperature span, which increase the input work required to drive the cooling cycle reversibly and reduce the temperature range of operation.
Generalizable control for quantum parameter estimation through reinforcement learning
Abstract Measurement and estimation of parameters are essential for science and engineering, where one of the main quests is to find systematic schemes that can achieve high precision. While conventional schemes for quantum parameter estimation focus on the optimization of the probe states and measurements, it has been recently realized that control during the evolution can significantly improve the precision.
Large Strain and Strain Memory Effect in Bismuth Ferrite Lead-free Ceramics
Electric-field-induced strain in ferroelectric materials has extensive applications in actuators and sensors. BiFeO3 (BFO) ceramic is a promising candidate for high-temperature electromechanical coupling applications due to its exceptionally high Curie Temperature (Tc~825 oC). Here, we reported an enhanced electric-field-induced strain in defective BFO ceramics. These defective BFO ceramics exhibit highly asymmetric S-E loops along with a strain memory effect.
