The day I wasn’t late
I'm a pro at procrastinating. My friends would tell me to be at a place by noon, knowing I'd show up around 4. Just in time for dinner. Along with my infamous reputation around cooking, I’m also known for being late. I admit, I do have a little problem with procrastinating. OK, OK, a big huge problem. But this year, I truly made an effort ... sorta ... kinda ... in a way. I did try one day. I remember that day very well. One of my brave best friends, Cynde Feste, and I were going shopping.

Teriyaki Duck Donburi
Hungry Hubby and I just love Wagamamas. Â We always order their prawn kushiyaki (and eye each other up suspiciously in case either one of us thinks they are getting the one which is left as they are served in odd numbers) but otherwise, pick almost at random and have almost never been disappointed in doing so. The only problem is, Wagamama really is pricey for an albeit “healthy” fast food restaurant and we can’t go more than a few times a year.
Deeper, by Deeper
supported by Bodhi I’m so excited I discovered this band Favorite track: Message Erased. Miles Egan I hardly ever listen to rock anymore but I like this album a lot. It borrows a lot from classic post punk and indie bands but never sounds derivative. RIYL the Fall, early Felt etc. Favorite track: Message Erased. more... / Record/Vinyl + Digital Album Includes unlimited streaming of Deeper via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.
Nutella Pudding
Nutella pudding made with just four ingredients takes the classic chocolate hazelnut spread to a whole new level. These pudding cups are so rich and creamy and a decadent dessert when you want to treat yourself. Sure, you can treat yourself to some Nutella straight from the jar but transforming it into a rich and creamy pudding takes it to a whole new level and I am all about next-level chocolate desserts. As a homemade pudding super fan, these Nutella pudding cups are a the top of my list.
Online job search becomes a true chore - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
This should not be so hard. All I want is a job. You know, the three letter word, J-O-B, the word some hate, some love and some of us just need. Silly me, I thought I had it all planned out. I am going to find me a job. I went to my computer and saw all the different websites to “help” you find that “perfect” job. Seems simple to me. I logged on to the first site. “What kind of job are you looking for?” it asked. A good paying job. Oh, about $100 an hour. With at least an hour and a half for lunch.
Jim’s birthday part two: the bowling disaster - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
Where were we? Ah, yes, we were talking about my favorite pastime — bowling. It’s my husband Jimmy’s birthday this month. Chances are that we will probably go bowling, which I hate. You see, I am the person who people talk about. Meaning, I cannot chew gum, walk and think at the same time. So what I do not understand is: How do you expect people to hold the ball and keep their eyes on the arrows? Then you are supposed to walk up to the line. How can I see the line if I am looking at the arrows?
Bowling to perform at College Hill Coffee - The Arkansas City Traveler : Entertainment
Winfield — Valentine’s Month is not over yet. Come spend a relaxing and enjoyable evening with Mark Bowling and your friends. He will be singing at 7 p.m. Friday, at College Hill Coffeehouse, 403 Soward, in Winfield. Bowling is a special songwriter among our many local and talented singers. I think of him as a Wordgiver. ‘Puppy love’ takes unexpected turn - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
I realized that I, too, had dated a med student years ago. And my mother, too, had the same reaction. But alas, it just did not work out. It wasn’t because of another girl per se. Well it was, but it wasn’t. It was because ... let me explain. Once upon a time, I was single, had a great job, and a great roommate. Long before my naiveté’s rubbed off, I had a checklist of what I wanted in a guy. Every guy I dated had his own checklist with his name written on top.
Cinnamon Apple Cheesecake Tarts
When a colleague told me they had just popped the question and gotten engaged, my baker’s brain kicked in and I came up with these Cinnamon Apple Cheesecake Tarts to celebrate their wonderful news. Knowing they weren’t into crazy sweet confections, what I came up are like a upmarket cross between an apple tart and homemade Cinnabons. Between the crisp cinnamon pastry, vanilla cheesecake filling and poached apple, you get a happy marriage of warmth, tartness and fruity sweetness.
Chronicling life with cancer and chemo - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
During both battles of cancer, I tried to find the humor in what life gave me. My humor was not to offend anyone or belittle others with cancer. Sometimes I really had to look hard for any humor in my life. But if I hadn’t looked for it, I would miss all the other detours and stops along the way. I had written posts on my Facebook to share with others that there is life and humor while battling cancer. Here are some more of my Facebook posts during my crazy cancer journey.
Flowers: perennials, annuals or plastic? - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
I mean, have you ever actually read the instructions? “Put plant in NE to SW area of home.” “If home has 15.7 hours of sunlight, then put plant in SWEN area for 2.76 hours.” I would buy little plants for a couple of dollars and think, “I can do this. How hard can it be?” Then I would sneak them home knowing what my family would say seeing the helpless and innocent plants succumb to their early death. Seeing the poor plants, they would just sigh as they walked way, shaking their heads.
The Bierle’s Christmas 2000 miracle - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
It was a gift they could not take back due to a wrong size or color. For you see, I had breast cancer. Not just one but two tumors. Our Christmas Day was spent hurrying to open presents so that my parents, my two kids (Jeremiah in fourth grade and Lindsey in third) and I could get on the snowy roads to Oklahoma City. With doctors appointments, and surgery planned that next week, it was not the merriest Christmas we have ever had.
Forever grateful for my wonderful husband - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
Well, I am thankful for my husband. Sometimes. Let me tell you why. Have you ever had a really, really bad date? A date so bad that every time you think about it you cringe. Years later, you finally reach a point you can just laugh at the memory. I have. Many, many years ago we were living in a small town in Georgia. Dad was preaching at a church, where I met Joe and his family.
Survivors tips to watch out for ‘pinkwashing’ - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
But did you know that the first original breast cancer awareness ribbon was once the color peach? In 1992, Charlotte Hailey, 68 years old and the fourth generation in her family to have breast cancer, created a peach colored ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness. Her ribbon, however, was for a different kind of awareness. She attached ribbons to a card with the message, “The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes to cancer prevention.
A rose by any other name still smells sweet - The Arkansas City Traveler : Columns
They say there is a story behind every name, which I firmly believe. So alas, here is my sad tale of woe. My name is JoAnn Bierle. I have been asked to write some articles for the Traveler. Apparently people think my true tales of woe, embarrassing situations and mistakes are funny. And now for our journey. For some reason people have a hard time with the pronunciation of my married name. I have and will answer to Burley, Bierly, Burle, hey you, or whatever.
