Janet Alexander’s Biography

Nothing is as hard in the beginning as knowing where to start. I was born at 6a.m. the morning after Christmas; I couldn't wait for my day to begin then, but I'm a habitual night person now. My birth was photographed for a picture book of Jews in America, but my image wasn't selected for publication. Contradiction and realism have since proven to be innate. Responsible, but not disciplined, impulsive, but rational, and I know better than to think I'm the first, last, or otherwise exceptional in how I describe myself. Wherever I am, I call California home. Ultimately, I want to be authentic to a sense of genuine experience and the only experience to which I can be genuine is my own. Handling choice, observing what I see, articulating meaning – to write for my life – believing that my words are worth being written, read and shared, considering life itself as compulsive viewing and living to find out, imparting significance, amusement, and wonder in how deeply the weight of my words can be felt and understood – until I've said all that I think I can.
