Co-Founder and COO at Brella, the world's leading event networking platform for conferences and exhibitions. Getty Over the years, we have organized thousands of events for major companies like Google and Samsung. Now we're helping those same organizations take their conferences online. Rather than cancel or postpone an event, it's often smarter — especially in these uncertain, economically turbulent times — to simply move that event online.
Photo: Getty When Mobile World Congress (MWC) canceled its 2020 event, that was the start of a rapid and turbulent shift in events. With nearly 100,000 attendees scheduled to attend, MWC is a cornerstone of the mobile phone industry. However, after multiple exhibitors pulled out, the organizers had no choice but to cancel the event, losing who-knows-how-much money in the process, not to mention wasted time. More events have canceled, like SXSW and Google Next.
By Jyrki Paananen, COO, Brella I know I’m not the first to talk about COVID-19 and its effect on events. It’s a trying time for the entire industry. This is one of the biggest wake-up calls for the industry and it’s causing organizations and governments to look at events in a critical way. We’ve seen a lot of cancellations and postponements over the past few weeks. I won’t get into those, but I will offer a potential solution to any event organizer not wanting to cancel or postpone: going virtual.
