KAAN Architecten delivers Matchbox, a compact mixed-use timber building
KAAN Architecten's design for Matchbox combines 36 social rental apartments with offices, retail, and hospitality spaces distributed on an active base. Its design adopts a freestanding volume with a triangular geometry, organized by a modular grid and continuous balconies. The apartments and offices are arranged around a communal garden and shared outdoor spaces. Matchbox is built almost entirely of wood, with a structure based on timber beams and columns and CLT floor slabs.

Project description by Kaan Architecten y De Zwarte Hond The commission includes the design of a new research and education building and the urban development of a new campus area. The project will be developed in the coming years within the framework set by TU/e. The proposal builds on the original masterplan by Sam van Embden from the 1960s, retaining the orthogonal structure and characteristic bridges.

Museum Paleis Het Loo
After winning the commission through a public competition in 2016, KAAN Architecten undertook the renovation and extension of Museum Paleis Het Loo, taking cues from the layout and proportions of the baroque palace and its historic surroundings. The ambitious project involved the addition of over 5000 square meters of new facilities and spaces, a careful restoration of the palace, and a meticulous asbestos removal process.
