Extreme Event Aware ( η -) Learning
Abstract Quantifying and predicting rare and extreme events is challenging because such events are infrequent, severe, and expensive to simulate. Existing data-driven methods often require multiple extremes in the training data or sampling process, leading to accurate predictions in quiescent regimes but high epistemic uncertainty in extreme-event regions. To overcome this limitation, we introduce Extreme Event Aware (η-) Learning, which does not require extreme events in the available data.

Semiconducting and magnetic lanthanide MXenes from intercalated halides
Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors are crucial for next-generation information storage and spintronic technologies1,2. MXenes, owing to compositional diversity and tunable properties, provide a platform for designing functional materials3,4,5. Incorporating lanthanides (Ln) introduces localized 4f electrons with strong spin polarization, while potentially enabling semiconducting behaviour, offering a viable route to magnetic semiconductors6,7.
Morning Briefing: Lindor, Bichette Trades Looking Unlikely
Good morning, Mets fans! The Mets are preparing to sell ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, but they reportedly do not intend to include significant amounts of cash to facilitate deals involving their expensive veterans, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Mets’ stance makes a Francisco Lindor or Bo Bichette trade significantly less likely.
Francisco Alvarez Starts Second Half With a Bang
Francisco Alvarez entered Thursday night with questions surrounding his future. He left it having provided a timely reminder of why the Mets should be careful about giving up on him. Batting ninth amidst trade speculation, Alvarez homered twice and helped guide the Mets’ pitching staff through a dominant performance in a 4-1 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The win moved the Mets to 41-57, but the larger takeaway may have been the performance of their 24-year-old catcher.
Morning Briefing: All-Star Festivities Conclude

3D nanoprinting of metals by spatiotemporally confined hot electrons via multiple-electron excitations in nanocrystals
Abstract For decades, multi-photon polymerization has been a key technology for fabricating complex 3D micro- and nanoscale structures from polymer materials. However, extending this capability beyond polymers remains a significant challenge. In particular, nanoscale metal printing is challenging because solid metal formation typically requires energy-driven reactions or thermally activated processes that are difficult to spatially localize, resulting in compromised feature resolution.
Morning Briefing: Lindor Could Be Activated Wednesday
Good morning, Mets fans! The Mets had three big leaguers rehabbing with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, and all three delivered excellent nights at the plate. Lindor came away from the game healthy and could be activated for the Mets’ doubleheader on Wednesday.
Sean Manaea Continuing to Look More Like Himself
Sean Manaea walked off the mound on Thursday believing his night wasn’t quite finished. He had worked through traffic for much of the evening and there was reason to think he had enough left in the tank to get another couple of outs. After 95 pitches and five-plus innings, Manaea wanted the baseball a little longer. The Mets, protecting both a tie game and their pitcher, chose otherwise.

The Mets needed production from the middle of their lineup, and Soto delivered with a double and the go-ahead home run in a 5-4 win over the Cardinals. Thursday’s performance stood out because it came after a stretch in which Soto had not looked like himself at the plate.

Good morning, Mets fans! The Mets had a rough night, as they got demolished by the Cardinals 7-0. Freddy Peralta struggled, allowing six runs on six hits over six innings. St. Louis did most of the damage in the third, scoring four runs in the frame. Offensively, they couldn’t get much going, finishing with just five hits on the night. Every day he hits the ball hard…he’s going to hit. I really believe in this team. We should be playing better, and I continue to believe that.” The Mets went on to lose 8-3 to the Mariners Tuesday night, securing a series loss.
Morning Briefing: Reinforcements Arrive, But Mets Drop Fifth Straight
Good morning, Mets fans! The Mets made a slew of roster moves on Tuesday, including activating A.J. Minter and Jared Young. Read more here. He allowed nine runs as Washington stormed back behind James Wood’s inside-the-park grand slam and multiple costly Mets errors.
The Mets’ Offense Is Finally Heating Up
On Thursday, the Mets finished off a dominant sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 9-4 win. The offense is finally finding its rhythm. Over the three-game set, the Mets put up a total of 22 runs. Overall, it was an extremely productive day for the Mets’ bats.
Christian Scott Has Another Solid Outing in Series Finale Against Rockies
Christian Scott‘s afternoon on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies revolved around a four-seam fastball that was extremely effective despite the high altitude of Coors Field. Scott threw 82 pitches and generated a total 11 whiffs, with the majority coming on the heater. Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images He opened the first inning by striking out Edouard Julien and Mickey Moniak swinging.
Freddy Peralta’s Gem Not Enough to Secure Victory Over Nationals
The New York Mets’ 5-4 loss against the Washington Nationals on Thursday was another example of a game the club had absolutely no business losing. It became another instance of them wasting one of the few things they can rely on in Freddy Peralta. Peralta looked exactly like the top-of-the-rotation arm the front office thought they were getting. He worked six innings, throwing 90 pitches while controlling counts well.
Morning Briefing: Juan Soto Has Forearm Tightness
Good morning, Mets fans! Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported before Tuesday’s game that Juan Soto has forearm tightness. Heyman noted that he was good to swing, but didn’t play the field. However, Soto was throwing pregame on Tuesday, and reports suggest that he is feeling fine, Heyman tweeted after the game. Soto DH’ed and went 1-for-4 with his second home run of the season. Robert Edwards-Imagn Images The Mets beat the Nationals on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game set.
Mets’ Offense Breaks Out in Second-Straight Victory Over Twins
If there is one thing the 2026 New York Mets have shown early this season, it’s that no lead feels entirely safe. That theme surfaced again Thursday night in a back-and-forth game where the Mets’ offense was able to produce enough to overcome a late collapse and still come away with a 10-8 win over the Minnesota Twins. The evening started precariously for starter Christian Scott, who struggled with command from the jump.
Morning Briefing: Mets’ Losing Streak Now at a Dozen
Good morning, Mets fans. The Mets have now dropped their 12th straight game, falling to the Twins 5-3. Nolan McLean Twirls Another Gem for Mets

Despite the lopsided final score, McLean’s performance was the Mets’ clear standout. Through 6 1/3 innings of work, McLean surrendered only three hits and two earned runs, striking out eight, bringing his season ERA to 2.70. Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images The right-hander set the tone right away, retiring the side in the first on three groundouts.
De novo-designed ribozyme-controlled riboregulator for cell-free diagnostics
Abstract Cell-free systems have great potential for nucleic acid assays, yet universal onsite diagnostics without preamplification are limited. Here, a universal cell-free diagnostic platform termed TRACKer (Target-Responsive non-preAmplification Cell-free diagnostic Kit) has been developed for detecting multiple respiratory viral RNAs in laboratory and field settings. TRACKer integrates three modules: ribozyme allostery module, riboregulator activation module, and output module.
Freddy Peralta’s Mets Debut A Mixed Bag
Freddy Peralta‘s Mets debut had its rough spots, but it didn’t need to be perfect. Backed by strong run support, the Mets pulled away for an 11-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Opening Day at Citi Field. Pittsburgh struck first. Oneil Cruz opened with a single to center, and Brandon Lowe followed with a two-run home run to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.
