SEC 'rivals' pay tribute to Pat Summitt
People all around the SEC remembered Pat Summitt — a coaching legend, family member, and friend — who passed away today at 64. Summit's teams dominated opponents throughout her career — she won more games than any college coach in history. The respect she earned throughout her brilliant career was evident in the social media reaction of influential SEC sports figures. The entire SEC came together to mourn the loss of a true champion, who completely changed the game.
Russell Westbrook chuckles about Steph Curry's 'underrated' defense
Barely disguised laughter isn't a typical reaction following a loss but that was exactly what the media heard from Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook after his team fell to Golden State, 120-111, in Game Five of the NBA conference finals. A reporter's question about whether Steph Curry's defense is underrated appeared to prompt the Westbrook giggle. Westbrook hid his face in his hand to conceal his laughter, but Kevin Durant came to the rescue in a matter of seconds.
Recruits ranked Alabama uniforms the worst in college football
Alabama football has been ranked No. 1 for a plethora of reasons -- conference titles, national titles, recruiting classes, and often AP poll standings. However, Pick Six Previews conducted a survey on 100 Division I recruits about uniforms in college football, and this time the Tide was at the top for a topic that was far from related to winning. Recruits voiced their opinions loud and clear and ranked Alabama No. 1 for the worst uniforms in college football.
Vanderbilt CB Tre Bell will transfer to Connecticut
Coach Derek Mason confirmed Vanderbilt cornerback Tre Bell is taking his talents to the University of Connecticut, Saturday. The news shouldn’t come as a surprise. Vanderbilt’s defense improved dramatically this season, but Bell had no part in it. The redshirt sophomore fell to third string on the depth chart in 2015, after starting four games in 2014, and finished his last season at Vanderbilt with 14 tackles.
South Carolina provides a look at its new practice facility
With all things new coming to Columbia, S.C., the Gamecocks are ready to add their brand new indoor practice facility to that list. A look at our new indoor facility! #Gamecocks #SpursUp https://t.co/jJxfVXJGQ2 — Gamecock Football (@GamecockFB) January 15, 2016 Coach Will Muschamp is already hard at work to turn around South Carolina after its three-win season, and this cutting-edge facility should help with that endeavor. It’s new, it’s polished, and it’s got improvement written all over it.
Vanderbilt QB Johnny McCrary to transfer
Johnny McCrary announced on his Instagram account that he is leaving Vanderbilt to make the most of the two years of eligibility he has left in college football. I don't know how you say good-bye to whom and what you love. I don't know a painless way to do it, don't know the words to capture a heart so full and a longing so intense. Laura Wiess, How It Ends #2 The sophomore struggled during the 2015 season with 12 interceptions. Only two SEC quarterbacks threw more picks.
Report: Vanderbilt looks to the West to find new offensive line coach
The Commodores have a new offensive line coach, according to Sports Illustrated’s Thayer Evans. Cameron Norcross was the offensive line coach at Fresno State for the past four seasons, after he started his coaching career in 2001 at his alma mater Nevada. He coached everything from Nevada’s run game to its offensive line, which he coached the last two seasons he spent there. Norcross played on the offensive line at Nevada from 1997-1999.
National writer offers mixed reviews for SEC coaching hires
College football had some pretty unbelievable coaching surprises in 2015, especially in the SEC. Although there was lots of movement around the country, the new coaches in the SEC all came from inside the conference. Some hires were smarter than others, according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken and his grading scale. Mark Richt’s move from UGA to Miami received an A.
Texas Tech suspends key WR for bowl game against LSU
Texas Tech suspended one of its best receivers for the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl against LSU on December 29. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said Devin Lauderdale failed to live up to the school’s expectations for student athletes, according to Suzanne Halliburton of the Austin American-Statesman, and the junior has been suspended indefinitely. As a result, the Red Raiders will have to face the Tigers without one of their key receivers.
Derek Mason post-game press conference: “This was a rough day at the office”
Rivalry Week in Tennessee didn’t disappoint up until the start of the second quarter — the Commodores were only behind by three points. However once halftime hit, the Tennessee Vols were up two touchdowns. Vanderbilt’s offense looked much cleaner overall although there were turnovers; Tennessee also sacked QB Kyle Shurmur in the end zone for a safety in the opening series of the second half. That was the Vols’ first safety since 2013.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
The Commodores are locked and loaded for Rivalry Week. Every single impact player will be on the field Saturday for the Tennessee Volunteers, and Vanderbilt has nothing to lose. This could be the Commodores last game of the season, but if they can pull off a win against the Vols, a bowl could potentially be in the picture. However, this is the furthest thing from coach Derek Mason’s mind right now.
Vanderbilt reveals uniform combo for Tennessee game
Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason tweeted out a brand new team uniform combo for Rivalry Week on Wednesday. The Commodores will be rocking an all-white fit with matte black helmets when they take on the Tennessee Vols. @VandyFootball will be taking a new uniform combo out east this weekend.
QB Kyle Shurmur will start for Vanderbilt vs. Volunteers
Kyle Shurmur is finally going to experience rivalry week in Tennessee as Vanderbilt’s starting quarterback. Coach Derek Mason is abandoning the dual-quarterback system that featured Shurmur and sophomore Johnny McCrary to focus on the freshman alone. Shurmur has to perform well against the Vols in order for the Commodores to have a chance in Knoxville. “For us, Kyle Shurmur needs to step on the football field,” Mason said.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
Despite their special uniforms, the Commodores performance on Saturday against Texas A&M in Nashville was anything but special. Vanderbilt’s offense failed to put a single point on the board, and Texas A&M asserted themselves early on. However, a couple of the Commodores put on impressive performances. Running back Ralph Webb passed the 1,000-yard career mark for the season, and inside linebacker Zach Cunningham had a team-high of 14 tackles, including three tackles for loss.
Derek Mason post-game press conference: “You can’t be a one-dimensional team”
Saturday was the first time Vanderbilt trailed at halftime in its last five SEC games; it was also the first time Texas A&M seized a win in Nashville. The Commodores were shut out by the Aggies 25-0 on their own turf. The beginning of the game started off strong for the Commodores defense. They held the Aggies to two field goals, had a few goal-line stands, and inside linebacker Zach Cunningham stepped up once again with a quarterback sack and forced fumble.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
Vanderbilt was shutout by Texas A&M at home Saturday. Although the Commodores competed with the Aggies up until the end of the second quarter, things went south quickly for a team that has performed well against its conference opponents the past two weeks. The defense held the Aggies to 25 points, but its strong work on the field wasn’t enough because the offense struggled to put points on the board.
Game Day Preview: What you need to know about Texas A&M-Vanderbilt
Texas A&M and Vanderbilt are meeting for the first time in Nashville, Tenn., and the second time ever. The Aggies beat the Commodores 56-24 in their first matchup in 2013, but the two SEC teams look a lot different now. This season, Texas A&M has lacked consistency at the quarterback position, while Vanderbilt’s defense continues to establish its relative dominance.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
Happy Wednesday, Vandy fans. After a solid win against Kentucky last weekend, coach Derek Mason believes his team is on the up-and-up. Texas A&M is next up on the list for the Commodores. It’ll be another conference game at home, and after the outcomes of the past two conference games Vanderbilt has played at home, this team has a chance to upset. . The two go way back to the wide receiver’s days at Saguaro High School in Arizona.
Derek Mason post-game press conference: “I like where (QB) Kyle (Shurmur) is. That’s why he started tonight.”
Vanderbilt seized its second conference win of the season over Kentucky in Nashville. They were up 11 points at the half, and although the Wildcats got back into the game in the third quarter, the Commodores found a way to seal the deal by four points. The offense looked exceptional against Kentucky’s defense compared to its usual routine.
Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason preparing for Kentucky to play two quarterbacks
Coach Derek Mason knows the efficiency of a dual-quarterback system as well as anyone. It’s what he’s used to better his offense, and although it still has a ways to go, rotating sophomore Johnny McCrary and freshman Kyle Shurmur has produced better results compared to McCrary handling all of the snaps on his own. Mason is presuming that Kentucky will work with a dual-quarterback offense this Saturday, and he knows the benefits of having versatility within the pocket.
Vanderbilt signs two members to its 2016 recruiting class
Vanderbilt added two additions to its basketball program Wednesday when both Payton Willis and Clevon Brown signed Letters of Intent. They will be eligible to compete for the Commodores next season. “We’re thrilled to add Clevon and Payton to our program,” said Stallings. “They possess high-level basketball skills and come from great families and we couldn’t be more excited in what they will bring to our program, both on and off the floor.
Caleb Azubike, Kyle Shurmur ready for Kentucky
Vanderbilt’s dealt with a laundry list of injuries this season, but defensive end Caleb Azubike (jawline break) and quarterback Kyle Shurmur (concussion) are no longer among the wounded. Azubike returned against Florida after missing three games. The senior had three solo tackles and forced and recovered a fumble on a fake field goal. His presence on the field made a significant difference, according to coach Derek Mason. “I thought Caleb brought some energy,” Mason said. “I thought he played well.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
Vanderbilt’s effort against Florida on Saturday gives the Commodores confidence that they can beat Kentucky this week. Vanderbilt (3-6, 1-4 SEC) proved it belongs in the SEC after competing with one of the best. The defense stepped up once again and the offense limited its turnovers, which has been the team’s downfall all season. Coach Derek Mason believes that the Commodores are just as good as the Gators after watching them compete deep into the fourth quarter.
Derek Mason press conference: “Too many jabs… no knockout punch”
When the Commodores were watching the Buster Douglas-Mike Tyson fight last night, they had no idea they would relive a similar routine on Saturday afternoon. Vanderbilt came close to upsetting the new top dogs of the SEC East — the Florida Gators. Vanderbilt put up a great fight against Florida; the team was ahead 7-6 at the conclusion of the third quarter. However with a little over two minutes left in the game, Austin Hardin made the game winning kick for the Gators to lead 9-7.
Former Vandy QB is eager to beat the Commodores from the other side
Florida native Josh Grady went from believing nothing could top beating the Florida Gators (7-1, 5-1 SEC) in the Swamp to craving a win over the Vanderbilt Commodores (3-5, 1-3 SEC), his former team. This one game separates Grady from playing in the SEC championship, something he never had the opportunity to do at Vanderbilt. He played in the SEC for five years, and he spent four of those standing on the sideline at Vanderbilt, playing in only 11 games.
Vanderbilt unveils uniform combo for Florida game
Coach Derek Mason tweeted out the uniform combination that Vanderbilt (3-5, 1-3 SEC) will be rocking in the Swamp this Saturday. Tweet: https://twitter.com/CoachDerekMason/status/662019337126064128 The matchup against the Florida Gators (7-1, 5-1 SEC) will be a tough one, especially since Florida only needs one more conference win to lock up the SEC East.
SEC fans confess their shameful secrets in hilarious spoof video
SEC fans are noted for their intense pride, but how much do they really know about their teams? Here’s a couple trivia questions: Do you Alabama fans know how many national championships the Crimson Tide have won? (Probably) Georgia fans, how many Uga mascots have their been? Tennessee faithful, can you recite every word to “Rocky Top”?
Vanderbilt LB Nigel Bowden, OL Justin Skule out for remainder of season
Vanderbilt (3-5, 1-3 SEC) suffered a tough, shutout loss to No. 18 Houston (8-0) last Saturday, but there’s no time for a pity party. The Commodores will have to face the Florida Gators (7-1, 5-1 SEC) despite the boatload of injuries. Linebacker Nigel Bowden (concussion) and offensive lineman Justin Skule (knee) won’t be able to touch the field for the rest of the season.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
The Commodores (3-5, 1-3 SEC) didn’t have the best Halloween in Houston; the offense continued to struggle, and the defense, despite trying their best, couldn’t handle Houston’s (8-0) powerful offense. The final score of 34-0 reflects the complete and utter dominance of Houston on both sides of the ball.
Vanderbilt alumni react to Houston loss: “I think Derek Mason is the right man for this program”
Despite a 34-0 loss to No. 18 Houston Saturday, there were still plenty of supportive reactions to the Commodores performance.. Although the Commodores couldn’t put any points on the scoreboard, the fan base remained loyal to the team that won its first SEC conference win over the Missouri (4-4, 1-4) last week. Vanderbilt quarterback commit Deuce Wallace made it clear that win or lose, he’s got the team’s back. He also doesn’t want to be questioned about it.
"I apologize for the bad ball tonight"
Coach Derek Mason doesn’t know if there is a solution this season or on his roster to the offensive troubles that continue to plague Vanderbilt’s season. Houston (8-0) completely shut out Vanderbilt (3-5, 1-3 SEC) with three interceptions to boot. The final score was 34-0. The offense got off to a slow start in the first half, and the Commodores were forced to punt in their opening drive.
Derek Mason hits home with an inspiring pregame speech
Derek Mason hasn’t had an easy job coaching Vanderbilt (3-4, 1-3 SEC), but that has not stopped him from believing in his team wholeheartedly. Mason assumed leadership over the program after former coach James Franklin left Vanderbilt behind to take the head coach job at Penn State in 2014. Mason’s tenure at Vanderbilt has been an uphill battle with far more losses than wins.
Mason watches Darreon Herring's play about 15 times
There’s no doubt that coaches love an exceptional play, but Derek Mason praised linebacker Darreon Herring’s play on an entirely new level. The Vanderbilt head coach appreciated the defensive play so much he watched it over and over again. Mason got excited just talking about it. “I mean the play was, you know, a special play for me because I look at those plays man, and you’re always looking for guys showing supreme effort,” Mason said. “You’re always looking for guys to strain to a finish.
Derek Mason: Houston must prepare for two different offensive styles
Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason plans on working with a two quarterback system when his Commodores (3-4, 1-3 SEC) take on No. 18 Houston (7-0). This week’s depth chart listed both Kyle Shurmur and Johnny McCrary at the No. 1 position. “I think the pressure’s on Houston,” Mason said.
Vanderbilt players give Derek Mason an ice bath after first SEC win
Vanderbilt embraced its first SEC win after suffering three conference losses to start the season. Although this is the Commodores’ first conference win since 2013, it’s the first SEC win of coach Derek Mason’s career. The former Stanford defensive coordinator finally got to bask in some SEC glory as Vanderbilt’s main man, as his players dumped the cold contents of a cooler all over him. The Commodores have struggled this season, but Saturday’s effort was worth it as they defeated the Tigers 10-3.
Game Day Preview: What you need to know about Vanderbilt-Missouri
Vanderbilt and Missouri both have losing SEC records going into the Week 8 matchup. They also both have struggling offenses, but Missouri’s five-star defense has the potential to shift the game in Mizzou’s favor. Offensive output through the air and on the ground will be crucial for the Commodores on Saturday. Here’s what else you need to know about Saturday’s game: 12 – The number of touchdowns both teams have scored all season.
Media picks Vanderbilt basketball to finish second in SEC
The 2015 SEC preseason media basketball poll picked Vanderbilt to finish right behind the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky received 406 points as favorites to take the SEC title, which is no surprise, but Vandy followed closely with 357 points. The Commodores are experienced on the court this year considering seven of the top nine players on the team from last year are returning. Four of them are starters, and all of them helped Vandy advance to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
Vanderbilt quarterback situation still murky
Vanderbilt (2-4, 0-3 SEC) is keeping its quarterback situation on the down-low for this upcoming Saturday, so the possibility remains for the Commodores to debut a new quarterback against Mizzou (4-3, 1-3 SEC). Coach Derek Mason made it clear that turnovers lose games, and he thinks this team has committed way too many. “When you look at it, we’ve had too many turnovers,” Mason said when asked about evaluating the quarterback position. “Turnover margin is extremely high.
Vanderbilt safety Andrew Williamson returns after injury
Andrew Williamson is back at safety for the matchup against Mizzou on Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 212-pound senior missed both the Middle Tennessee and South Carolina games due to an arm injury. Watching Vandy from the sidelines has been difficult for one of the team’s top defensive performers. Williamson had a total of 15 tackles leading up to his injury. He’s been a significant contributor since 2014 when he finished the season with 32 solo tackles and four tackles for loss.
2 things every Vanderbilt fan needs to know today
Head coach Derek Mason is making some big changes for the Commodores this week, and there’s nothing to debate. Vanderbilt (2-4, 0-3 SEC) has plenty of room for improvement after losing to South Carolina (3-4, 1-4 SEC). The Commodores had “giveaways” rather than turnovers, according to Mason, and the team currently has the worst turnover margin in the SEC. The homecoming game is quickly approaching, and there are question marks at a number of positions.

Stanley 'Boom' Williams back, but Jojo Kemp provides competition
Jojo Kemp was on fire against Missouri, but the flames nearly burned out in last week’s win over Eastern Kentucky. Kemp was given a chance to shine with Stanley “Boom” Williams on the sideline, but he finished with only 46 yards with 14 attempts as Kentucky was forced to rally for the overtime victory. Williams returned to practice this week after dealing with a personal issue.
Patrick Towles avoids social media backlash
If you’re looking for Patrick Towles on Twitter, he’s not there. Kentucky’s quarterback removed social media apps from his phone prior to the Wildcats’ game with Florida, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported, and he hasn’t tweeted since Sept. 18. Towles doesn’t want to read what’s being said about him. “You want to convince yourself you know what it’s going to be like and stuff like that, but you can’t,” Towles told the Courier-Journal’s Jon Hale.

Kentucky (3-1) just relied on Jojo Kemp to close the game.
