Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job outside college was as an associate editor at the American Nuclear Society, a nonprofit for all nuclear power & security pros.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Once! At Literati, a local bookshop in Ann Arbor that leaves a typewriter out and encourages patrons to leave their own notes behind.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means being devoted to the truth, to telling the story, and to making an impact, however you can.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email, most definitely. Like any good Millennial, I rarely answer my phone if I don't know the number. You could leave a voicemail though

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Asana is a life-saver for keeping track of all my projects and content. I also make great use of the entire Google suite of products.

What's your favorite social network?

I'm partial to Reddit, as it gives a good look at what people in the community are interested in and want to know more about.

Who do you wish followed you?

I would love if Shonda Rhimes followed me. I've been a Grey's Anatomy fan from the beginning, and Shonda's work never fails to impress!

Why did you become a journalist?

I want to tell stories, and I want to be constantly learning new things. What better way to do that than becoming a journalist?

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I didn't get into journalism until college, when I joined the yearbook staff and later helmed it as editor in chief.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I loved the profile I got to write about a Wisconsin carpenter, who is Deaf, and his wife, who run an amazing independent business.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be willing to work hard, and always remember why you chose this path. Things will get tough, but it's almost always worth it.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Evenings, after my day job is done.

What's your favorite drink?

I love a cold root beer on a hot summer day.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Either hiking the local trails, curled up on the couch with a book, or at the local CrossFit box.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I love keeping up with STAT and The New York Times.
