1 Introduction Ceramic technology is simultaneously a material practice, a body of learned knowledge and an infrastructure of everyday life. Decisions concerning clay procurement, preparation, temper, forming, firing and vessel use are therefore not isolated technical acts; together they constitute a chaîne opératoire through which communities reproduce skills, respond to performance demands and negotiate social relations (Arnold et al. 1991; Tite 1999; Roux 2019; Eramo 2020).
