Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Breaking-news reporter at the Tampa Bay Times. Before that, I interned at newspapers in Michigan, Florida and Washington, D.C.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Of course. What do you think I am? A novice?

How is social media changing news?

For better or worse, it has made the link between content producers and consumers more intimate, messy, interesting and weird.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

As a reporter, I'm usually the one doing the pitching. But if I were the editor? Dinner and wine wouldn't hurt, I guess ;)

What's your favorite social network?

At the moment? Twitter. Followed close by Instagram.

Why did you become a journalist?

Realized how long it took to be a neurosurgeon, decided to stop kidding myself & turned to my true love: writing. Plus, I've always been nosy

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did. And I did everything, including write, edit and layout. I even covered sports once (badly).

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A 2013 investigative series that led to the closing of Florida's largest - and some would say worst -- work release facility

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

This is a tough, great job. Journalism is not for the wishy-washy. So if you're thinking about jumping in, use both feet. Also, get clips.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Now
