Frontiers in Medicine Research Topic "Physiological barrier-permeative drug delivery"
Physiological barriers, or blood-tissue barriers (BTBs, the term "histo-hematic barriers" is also used) is the main regulating mechanism for tissue ingestion of various chemical compounds, either intrinsic for the living organism, or extrinsic one. In its normal state, BTB serves for tissues defence from any intrusion and can be permeative only for small molecules with an appropriate surface charge.
Passing of Nanocarriers across the Histohematic Barriers: Current Approaches for Tumor Theranostics
3. Chemical Modification of the BTB Permeability Drug delivery systems can be chemically modified in a variety of ways to help them penetrate histohematic barriers more effectively: (1) osmotic agent administration; (2) inhibition of efflux pumps (e.g., P-glycoprotein inhibitors etc.); (3) disruption of tight junctions; (4) disruption of extracellular matrix (ECM); (5) NO-donors (). Some examples of studies using such technologies are summarized in .
