Unlocking Untapped Potential in Plastics Recycling
By Kara Pochiro | Published on September 9, 2025 A new August 20, 2025 Resource Recycling feature by Steve Alexander, APR President & CEO, shatters the common misconception that plastics recycling is limited by capacity. Instead, it reveals a system that’s already primed to make a bigger environmental and economic impact today.
Recycling More and Using Less on Earth Day 2024
The world is in a battle against plastic waste. Alongside reduction and reuse, recycling is a vital strategy for winning that battle. Every year, recycling keeps billions of pounds of plastic out of oceans and landfills. On Earth Day, we remember that when we recycle more, we can all use less - less of the Earth's finite resources and less energy to extract and process virgin materials. When virgin plastic is replaced by recycled content, the energy saved can be as much as 70%.
APR Goes to Washington
The hearing followed standard Congressional protocol which has witnesses offering brief opening statements before answering questions from Senators. Read Steve's opening statement here. In his testimony, Steve emphasized that APR is the voice of plastic recyclers. He said, "We are the boots on the ground dedicated to making recycling work every day across the United States.
APR Represents Recyclers at the UN Environment Program
APR is pleased to be participating in the Second Session of the UN Environment Programme Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-2) on May 29 - June 2, 2023 in Paris, France as an accredited organization. INC-2 is intended to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.
Recognizing the True Value of Recycled Plastics is More Important Than Ever
The success of plastic recycling is dependent on consistent demand from brand companies and manufacturers. As brand companies continue to publicly state a wide variety of sustainability commitments that commonly include increased postconsumer resin (PCR) content and design for recyclability, it would seem the two industries could naturally work hand in hand for mutual success.
APR Demand Champs Press Release
A program designed to expand market demand for recycled plastics has generated almost 7 million pounds of new demand in its first year. The APR Recycling Demand Champions Campaign, created by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in 2017 to develop new markets for recycled plastics, announced the results at the APR annual meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. APR also announced several new participants who have committed to increase their use of postconsumer resin (PCR) in the upcoming year.
The View from APR: Why the industry will survive - and thrive
The View from APR: Why the industry will survive – and thrive Every time oil prices decline, and scrap prices fluctuate, there seems to be an automatic jump to the conclusion recycling will not survive. Nothing could be further from the truth. Plastics recycling in 2016 remains a strong, growing, vibrant and economically sustainable industry. Demand for recycled plastic material for reuse in manufacturing has never been stronger.
