Kara Stoller: Reflecting on a Chamber career
In December 2007, I arrived in Steamboat Springs to join the Steamboat Springs Chamber team as the special events director. Never in a million years could I have imagined I would follow my brother out west. Yet off I was from Philadelphia to live in a small ski town in Colorado. Now, 15 years later, it’s time for me to say a bittersweet goodbye to the organization and so many of the people that helped me grow from that new resident to a passionate, dedicated community member.
From the Chamber: Staying positive and kind isn’t always easy
Kara Stoller For Steamboat Pilot & Today Kara Stoller Yesterday, I attended the grand opening of the Sleeping Giant School. What an incredible place for our future leaders to grow and learn. The speeches highlighted all the work that led up to the school’s opening, from our community voting to fund the school to the creative minds who designed the school to the dedicated teachers starting there this week.
From the Chamber: Maintaining a balance
Kara Stoller For Steamboat Pilot & Today Kara Stoller COVID-19 taught our community and the country many lessons and shifted our priorities and perspectives. Last spring, we saw firsthand what happens when we don’t have visitors: businesses shutter, tax collections plummet, services are cut. Sure, you may have enjoyed quieter trails than usual, but that came at a cost. We need visitors to our area to support our economy; however, we also want to maintain our prized quality of life.
From the Chamber: Staffing struggles in businesses
Kara Stoller For Steamboat Pilot & Today Kara Stoller John F. Russell Businesses in Routt County are thriving. But they are also struggling with issues like employee attraction and retention that make running a business in a mountain town, no matter the size, uniquely challenging. Having a fully staffed team is often an issue for local businesses. The unemployment rate in Routt County, as of December 2019, is 1.7%, compared to the state of Colorado unemployment rate of 2.4%.

Kara Stoller, John Bristol, Jason Lacy, Beth Melton and Cole Hewitt For Steamboat Pilot & Today STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — In case you haven’t noticed, over the last two years, our community’s economic development program has undergone a sea of change. It’s been redefined, reinvigorated and given new direction. From the Chamber: Community faces issues with housing, child care
News | June 12, 2019 Kara Stoller For Steamboat Pilot & Today Kara Stoller John F. Russell A few weeks ago, our community had the opportunity to hear a presentation the Steamboat Springs Chamber helped organize on emerging trends in the Colorado economy. Presented by Alison Felix, vice president and Denver branch executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, the presentation included data from the national, state and local level.
From the Chamber: Creating vitality in the valley
Kara Stoller For Steamboat Pilot & Today February 26, 2019 Kara Stoller For Steamboat Pilot & Today February 26, 2019 Eighteen months ago the Steamboat Springs Chamber staff and board of directors made a conscious decision to challenge business as usual. We took an in-depth look at all our service areas, programs and events and asked if what we were currently doing was supporting business growth and making Steamboat Springs a wonderful place to live, work and visit.
Chamber CEO: New mission, new vision
Leo Buscaglia once said, "Change is the end result of all true learning." The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association has been serving the business community for over 100 years, and we have lasted this long by continually evolving. To support our members to the best of our ability, in 2017 we knew it was time for the Chamber to evolve yet again.
Chamber CEO: Diversify local economy
The 2018-19 school year has begun in Steamboat Springs. Kindergarteners and their parents are full of nerves and excitement. Seniors walk into school with an air of confidence like never before. This school year will be different for some kids, wondering if this might be their last year in Steamboat. In the coming months, Smartwool employees will face some tough decisions.
Chamber CEO: Economic development
What does economic development mean to you? That's the question Economic Development Director John Bristol has been asking across Routt County over the past year. Responses often include attracting certain types of business, facilitating real estate development and increasing tourism, among other responses. Today we're working to redefine what economic development looks like across the county.
Chamber CEO Kara Stoller: Join the discussion about special events
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The new year brings a sense of hope for renewed energy and focus, fresh starts and new perspectives. January inspires people to challenge the status quo, recommit and strive for something new. The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association team is excited to share a new vision, mission and brand in the coming weeks. Kara Stoller: ‘Tis the season to shop local
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — There is a significant economic impact when we choose to buy local. When we spend money locally we are adding lasting dollars into our local economy. The American Independent Business Alliance looked at multiple studies and found that on average 48 percent of each dollar spent at a locally-owned business stayed in the local economy and continued to recirculate, versus less than 14 percent spent elsewhere.
Kara Stoller: Grateful for Steamboat community
Mother Nature was good to us this year with a beautiful and long fall, my favorite time of year. I was not left pining for more weekends of hiking and mountain biking as I so often do. The extended season had me excited and grateful to see the mountain get more and more snow over the last few weeks. It made me more anxious to step into my bindings and make some turns. Moving from one season to the next here in our little slice of paradise is a time of anticipation.
Steamboat Springs Chamber CEO: Chamber offers many events to get members involved
With the kids back in school and the arrival of fall, families in the community are settling back into a more predictable, albeit busier, routine. Here at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, for better or worse, we rarely settle into a routine. There is always a new project to start, membership education event to organize and initiatives to drive. Currently, our team is working to bring our members together.
