Kinross’ proposed near monopoly of two essential Interior highways, the Alcan and the Richardson, is an unprecedented use by a foreign-owned company to take over the use of these critical highways with a 24-7-365 ore-hauling truck convoy for its profit. This is irresponsible and not in the public’s best interest. A convoy of mega, 95-foot-long, dual side-dump truck and trailers, each weighing about 165,000 lbs.
How many will be injured or die because of the state administration’s done deal to use essential Alaska highways for a foreign company’s 24-7-365, for-profit, gold ore hauling project that will be hitting the Alaska and the Richardson Highways as early as January 2024?
Some things are happening about which every Delta Junction resident should be concerned. Kinross, the foreign owned company that operates the Fort Knox mine near Fairbanks, is developing two new open pit mines on leased land near Tok from the Tetlin Village. In public presentations Kinross indicates that beginning in 2024 they plan to transport 5,000 tons of raw ore each and every day using commercial trucks on our essential public highways between Tok and Fort Knox.
