Excerpt: "Getting Elected is the Easy Part"
“Although an overt threat is never clearly articulated, the potential for serious political consequences makes it all the more trepidatious to consider crossing the aisle on a big bill where every vote is counted and closely watched.” Editor’s note: The following chapter on working across the aisle is an excerpt taken from Washington state senator Karen Keiser’s book Getting Elected is the Easy Part: Working and Winning in the State Legislature, which was published in July.
It won’t be easy, but WA can launch the airport of the future
We are at the start of the greatest transformation in flight since the development of the jet engine. It is not going to happen overnight, and we won’t see large, emissions-free commercial aircraft anytime soon, but like what we have witnessed with space exploration, technological advancements will continue rapidly. Help more students access quality job apprenticeships
You often hear that a college degree is the only path to secure high-wage, high-skill employment. But that’s not how it has to be. Nearly 800,000 people in our state who signed up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act no longer must fear a diagnosis of a chronic illness, because they now have coverage to help them manage their condition. IN 2012, nearly 25 percent of the people in Yakima County had no health insurance. With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the uninsured rate dropped by more than half, to 11.6 percent in 2014. By today, it has fallen even further.
Reducing classroom size for students starts with building more classrooms
AT a time when the Legislature is debating the best way to pay for basic education in K-12 schools, it makes sense to start with the most basic element of all: classrooms. No matter what we do this legislative session, we’re going to need more of them. That means tackling an outdated school-construction model that has created inequity and inefficiencies across our state’s 295 school districts.
