Lozano: Leaving UTRGV is bittersweet in every sense – Rio Grande Guardian
After 25 transformative years at UTRGV, with my heart in my hand, I am deeply honored to announce that I will be returning to my alma mater, Rice University as the chair of the Materials Science and NanoEngineering – Rice University Department (MSNE)—a department that changed the trajectory of my life. Rice gave me the tools, opportunities, and dreams to make an impact through engineering.

National Science Foundation is a big supporter of UTRGV's engineering program – Rio Grande Guardian
EDINBURG, Texas – The National Science Foundation is a strong supporter of UT-Rio Grande Valley’s engineering department, say leaders of the program. The support was in evidence when two NSF representatives spoke at an Inaugural Ph.D. Celebration Launch hosted recently by the College of Engineering & Computer Science (CECS). UTRGV leaders say they were proud to have Dr. Germano Iannacchione and Dr. Dr. Daniel G. Linzell in attendance.
Dr. Miguel Nevárez explains how and why Pan American University joined the UT System – Rio Grande Guardian
EDINBURG, Texas – UT-Rio Grande Valley President Emeritus Miguel A. Nevárez holds the distinction of being the longest-seated Hispanic president in any college or university in the United States. During his long tenure as president of Pan American University and its successor, UT-Pan American, from 1981 to 2004, Nevárez awarded more than 30,000 diplomas and presided over 100 commencement ceremonies. However, Nevárez was unable to land a doctoral program in engineering.

Hinojosa: Remembering Dr. Hector P. Garcia – Rio Grande Guardian
As Texans, it is important that we remember and celebrate the remarkable contributions of our state’s heroes. One such individual is Dr. Hector P. Garcia, a trailblazing figure whose legacy continues to inspire generations. In 2009, I authored and passed legislation designating the third Wednesday in September as Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day through Senate Bill 495.
Perryman: Staying Put! – Rio Grande Guardian
More than any other state, people born in Texas stay in Texas. The US Bureau of the Census recently released data indicating the state of residence by place of birth. When you look at the percentage of people born in Texas, still living in the United States and, in fact, still living in Texas, you get more than 82% as of 2021. That’s considerably higher than anywhere else. Other states where people tend to stay include North Carolina (75%), Georgia (74%), California (73%), and Utah (73%).
Lozano: I am thrilled to announce the launch of UTRGV's first Doctoral program in Engineering – Rio Grande Guardian
I am thrilled to share with you the launch of our first Doctoral program in Engineering! Words can hardly express the profound sense of accomplishment and pride that permeated every moment of this historic occasion.
Opinion: Dreamers are counting on the Senate to pass the Build Back Better Act
My story begins in Chihuahua, Mexico. I was fortunate enough to be born to parents who had the courage to leave one land behind in search of a home where safety, opportunity and freedom could be found. That story is not unlike the millions of immigrant Americans who accepted the challenge of migration to seek the promise of a better life, but that life — the American dream — can be unattainable under the current immigration system.
Letter: Regulating the internet must not veer into government overreach
(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah's 3rd Congressional District Incumbent Republican Rep. John Curtis (shown) debates Democrat Devin Thorpe for the 3rd District of Utah's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, October 15, 2020. By Karen Lozano | The Public Forum | April 1, 2021, 12:00 p.m. Like Rep. John Curtis, I am concerned about the dangerous proliferation of misinformation on today’s social media platforms.
Letter: Curtis must carefully weigh free speech against misinformation
Like Congressman John Curtis, I am concerned about the dangerous proliferation of misinformation on today’s social media platforms. It has the potential to mislead massive audiences into believing untruths and acting dangerously. However, as someone also concerned about government overreach, I fear that Congress is too easily relying on the heavy hand of government regulation to solve this problem.

Letter: Church has embraced technology commendably during pandemic
During this challenging COVID-19 pandemic, I am grateful for the laws that protect our religious freedom. I am also thankful for the actions my church has put into place after having to cancel our regular church meetings. Leaders of my church have encouraged their members to use technology to share gospel messages, hold virtual meetings and classes.
Letter: Health care workers deserve extreme respect and support
I want to publicly thank our local doctors and health care workers for working on the front line of the coronavirus. Their load is heavy both physically and emotionally while caring for so many patients under extraordinary conditions. Not only are they risking their health, but they’re also bearing the burden of potentially infecting their families and so many of them are self-isolating from their families to decrease the risk of spreading the infection.
Optimizing the dehydrogenation catalyst of higher normal paraffins supported on a nanocrystalline gamma alumina
This study presents an optimization of dehydrogenation catalysts components including platinum, indium, and lithium using response surface methodology (RSM). The catalysts were supported on a synthesized nanocrystalline gamma alumina and evaluated in the dehydrogentaion reaction of higher normal paraffins (C10-C15).
